Pasco Stakes at Tampa Bay

Postby Pete » Sat Jan 12, 2013 1:36 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know why Fallen Sky (and favorite) Purple Egg were scratched out of today (1-12-13) Pasco Stakes at Tampa?

Thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete,
Nice to see you back. No official word for either horse, but Cibelli previously said, after Purple Egg was scratched (less than 2 weeks ago) from the GP Derby due to a fever.....that his next start would be either the Pasco or the Holy Bull relying on how well she thought he was recovering from his illness.
I would imagine, if that was the reason why he scratched....especially after his last good work, he may not have bounced out of it as well as she wanted. If she still needs more time I wouldn't be surprised to see him wait till the Sam F Davis 2/2/12 to bring him back....both the Holy Bull and the Sam F Davis are 10 points. TJ

Fallen Sky

Postby Pete » Sun Jan 13, 2013 7:42 pm

Hi TJ,

Thanks for the response and info on Purple Egg who I felt was the most difficult horse for Fallen Sky. I did the mating and arranged the breeding.

Fallen Sky apparently was scratched because he's selling at as hip #297 on Tuesday. I was loathe to contact his connections given the proximity to the race (my curiosity not relevant if there was something wrong with the horse). He had been training spectacularly and with Purple Egg out I thought that he had an excellent chance.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete,
Good job connecting the dots with Falling Sky:>) He may work today in the optional under tack show and should bring a big number in Ocala tomorrow. TJ

Falling Sky topped OBSJAN’s opening session at $425,000.

Hi Patuxet,

Thanks for the update. Blood Horse featured his sale in this article:
http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/ ... ale-opener

I expect that Fallen Sky will be pointed towards the Hutcheson Stakes (G2) on Feb 2nd.

With some luck it could be a big day for Copper Penny and me. Tritap (c. 2009 bt Tapit - Victory Road by Ikari) is being pointed towards the Strub Stakes (G2) also on Feb 2nd, after running a game 2nd in the San Fernando Stakes (G2) this past Saturday. We sold Tritap at Keeneland Sept. for $450,000 in 2010.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete,
He topped the sale and only galloped in the under tack show....impressive. Glad for you and his connections. Falling Sky is currently nominated to the Holy Bull at GP, which was done by his previous connections. I'm assuming Marc Casse might be the trainer, would you know Pete? TJ

Hi TJ,

Falling Sky didn't need to work since he's been racing with a record of: 3-2-0-0. His only loss was a 4th place finish in the Inaugural Stakes to Purple Egg but he followed that with a very sharp allowance win.

I believe he'll be pointed towards the Hutcheson Stakes. Justin Casse was the agent that purchased him but I don't know that Mark Casse will be the new trainer.

Hi Pete,
You're probably right about the Hutchenson (and he is nominated to it), good thing....the Holy Bull came up real tough. Falling Sky worked 5/8ths Monday at Palm Meadows 1:00.88 breezing. His new trainer will be John Terranova. TJ

Hi TJ,

The Hutch makes sense chronologically, (proximity to the sale) but it nominated and may enter/start very tough. Unless there's a mass exodus, Terranova will be sending his nice, new, high priced colt against some very robust competition.

We (Copper Penny) kept the home-bred half-sister, Lemon Splash (m. 2008 by Lemon Drop Kid) who was 11-0-3-6, $96,776 in 2012 campaigning with Bob Tiller. No wins and no stakes races and still nearly $100k for the year - nice tough mare.

Regards,

Pete

Hi Pete,
Yes, that was the best move to wait on the one turn Hutchenson given the furthest he's been so far is 6 1/2 furlongs. That work on Monday should satisfy the new connections to give him a try. Here's hoping he makes stakes brackets for you and Copper Penny....that would help Lemon Splash's status when she gets to the breeding shed:>) TJ

Hi Pete,
Falling Sky is cross entered this Saturday in the Hutch at GP and the Sam Davis at Tampa. TJ

Hi TJ,

Thanks for the update, I appreciate your keeping me up to date on Falling Sky.

I reviewed the entries for the Hutch and (on first blush) it would appear that it didn't fill as tough as I would have thought from the noms. The Sam Davis appears to be about the same or perhaps a tad tougher.

The Strub filled as I suspected it would for Tritap so I'm hopeful that both horses can give a good account of themselves.

Pete

Hi Pete,
I saw it the same way you did...I would think Terranova might keep him here (GP) and run in the Hutch...since it's a shorter and possibly easier race than the Sam Davis. Looks like Falling Sky will run well in there...I think he has to beat Merit Man. Let's hope he does well wherever he decides to go. TJ.......update: It's official, Falling Sky is out of the Hutch and will run in the Sam Davis.

Hi Pete,
Falling Sky ran a real nice race today, holding off Dynamic Sky while earning 10 Derby points. TJ
