I remember growing up, before i ever had been to a horse track. My dad is a horse guy. not to the extent that I am but he is a horse guy. He likes to gamble. He's a weekend Warrior.
I remember begin picked up from school in the winter of whatever it is and my father telling me stories about this super god like race horse named holy bull. it's all he would talk about. holy bull this, holy bull that. I thought holy bull was the best race horse ever. You know back then racing didn't really come on TV, my dad would go down to oaklawn and wager and watch him in his races
So the day the derby comes on and I'm freaking glued to the Tv. the first race horse i'd ever seen in my life. ever. i was what.. i couldn't have been older than 8.
So I sit there and watch the race expecting this horse to just grow wings and fly away (shit i was 8 i mean that literally) and he lost. he not only lost, he lost bad. I think that was the grindstone derby. don't quote me on that. I knwo it was a derby that Nick Zito won because I remember seeing him running around looking crazy after the race but i don't remember which horse he won it with. I guess it could only be 2 lol it was either grindestone or go for gin
I was so freaking heartbroken. I didn't even know what i was watching lol and I was heartborknen beucase i knew my dad was heartbroken. how could the superhorse lose? What the hell happened?
I never really got over that. But that was my introduction to racing. I went to the track the next fall with my dad and the rest was history as they say
so the question I want to ask is, what to you was the biggest derby disappointment that you can remember?
In lieu of the derby here is a question..

hi bdw0617
First thing that came to mind, when you asked what was 'the biggest Derby disappointment' is that...
...the Kentucky Derby itself, under the watchful eye of those wonderful caretakers
of the KyDerby (at Churchill Downs Inc
), has seemingly become more the bloated spectacle (don't ya just love the possibility of up to 20 horse fields
...how do you spell wreak havoc?), than the great horserace.
That disappoints me
...
as did Lookin at Lucky finding himself pinned (for all intents and purposes) at/to the rail, soon after breaking from the number one hole.
Opinion...that was a KyDerby where the best horse did NOT win.
Best to ya.
