Orb covered the third widest trip in winning the Derby

Only Frac Daddy (17th) and Vyjack covered more.

Orb ran the final quarter in 25.88 seconds and was the only horse to break 26 seconds. The next fastest was Revolutionary (3rd) in 26.09.

Orb's first 1/2 mile was 47.66 seconds and his last 1/2 mile was 51.02, .46 seconds faster than Revolutionary

Orb, wide throughout, covered 80 feet more than rail-riding Golden Soul...or roughly 9 lengths of extra ground.

Revolutionary, under Calvin Borel, covered the shortest total trip while Gold Soul covered the second shortest trip.

that's great info

so revolutionary and golden soul weren't so much good as they just got really ground saving rides.

and orb is really, really much better than this crop

Other factors in play. the NBC commentator walked the track and said the rail was OK, but the 7 path was much better, which is a great equalizer.
