Ride On Curlin

Postby madelyn » Mon Jul 15, 2013 10:29 am

Stabled near my horse is this wunderkind called "Ride On Curlin". Just a two year old, he got a solid 2nd at Churchill in June (MSW). Not what he did, it is HOW he did it. The very small time trainer was then faced with a seven figure offer from Europe. The horse was gone over with a microscope, the buyers flew in ,the owner upped the price, the buyers hemmed and hawed. So this past Saturday the horse galloped out at Ellis to win by 7 and set a new track record. Regardless of whether or not the sale goes thru, I think he is a colt to watch. BTW he was a $25K yearling purchase..

I've heard a lot of buzz on this horse. I do have to say not in love with the name. It's fine if he's a Game On Dude type, but if you want to win the Derby and have your name in the history books as one of those classic winners, you really want "Ride On Curlin"? Not exactly Secretariat or Zenyatta is it? Obviously if he's incredible, the name will suddenly sound more appealing, but I'd name them hoping for something special. Unless the accomplishments work to his benefit, Jess's Dream sounds like a claimer or a minor stakes winner in New Mexico. Cozmic One sounds like a quarter horse. Hmm. :?

It's not as unappealing to me as "Supersaver". Or "Isitingood". There are hundreds of names out there I think are appalling.

I wonder how people come up with the names - unless they are all like me and it is 11:45pm on Jan 31st of the 2 year old year and I am desperate..

God save us all from the naming habits of Mike Pegram. ;) Actually Midnight Lute's a pretty good one, I'll give him credit there. Unless of course someone else named the horse. The thing with Govenor Charlie and his admission that he misspelled governor by accident was a facepalm moment.

I dunno about Super Saver. No real hate or like for it. Better than those horses with the word "Souper" put in their name. Yeah, we get it, you're the heiress of Campbell's Soup, now stop putting the word "soup" in there. It just looks like you can't spell.

hi Madelyn

Yes, he broke his maiden in eye-popping, New Track Record setting fashion (on June 13/2013).

Can't recall the last time a 2-year-old wowed me (this time of year) with such a head-shaking, eye-popping MSW winning performance.

Forget that Ride On Curlin accomplished what he did at Ellis Park. I sense that this Curlin colt did it so easily, so effortlessly, so efficiently...I'll accept him as something potentially VERY special.

To accelerate the way he did; first, early-on to overtake the leaders, and maintain his lead; then again when asked [by jockey Calvin Borel] at the head of the stretch to separate (which he did by 7 3/4 lengths, with plenty left) from any challengers, was absolutely a rare, and scintillating accomplishment.

That was one special performance, and if this Curlin colt continues to be what he appears he very well may be...we could be witnessing the evolution of a horseracing super-star.

Reportedly, his next start will be the Saratoga Special, in approx. 3 weeks...and I am looking forward to seeing it. Let's see how he handles the company at the Spa.

Ride On Curlin has a rare gift of not just speed, but BRILLIANCE; bestowed upon few. Plus, he appeared (based on what I saw anyway) to be quite cool, calm, and professional. Are those ingredients for success, or what?

I'll second that...here, here!!!

Best to ya.

Respectfully

Well I hope, for his connections, that he stays sound and continues to develop. They reportedly walked away from the offer.

I dunno about you guys, but I root for Curlin babies to do well so fingers crossed with Ride On Curlin. If this colt is everything the buzz is saying, maybe it'll help Curlin with getting mares--not that he's had trouble, I just mean that have some evidence of precocious offspring can help. Everybody must think they need to wait til 3 for the real action to begin so you know the ones who want to see their horses run as 2yos may not have him as their first choice. If Ride On Curlin does well at 2, that has to be good for the old man. :)

Not gonna lie, part of it has to do with Curlin himself, and part of it is wanting Rachel's colt to have the strongest chance possible to knock'em dead next year.

Heidilady, if you want a Curlin baby to root for take a look at Socialbug. She looked special today breaking her maiden at DMR. (And she's a half-sister to Midnight Lute.)

Done and done. :) I have a lot of stable mail updating to do. I'm also a big fan of Midnight Lute (mainly because of Real Quiet, RIP) but I'm happy to extend that to his female family. The better the extended family does, the better he looks as a stallion.
