this is a great article.
over the last 5-6 months i for the most part have not followed racing as much as i usually do beucause my web development business is growing to the point where i have to manage it and there are things that i do that i can't show other people how to do. i can't take off work at 1pm everyday anymore and not work on fridays anymore that won't work for the time being.
AT least until the end of this year this is how it has to be for me,my heart is not in it to do this 12 hours a day like i am now for more than this year i will burn out but we are growing and money is really good. I'm grooming a project manager and hopefully bh the end of the year she can do my dirty work.
anyway i ay all that to say, because i hav ehad to step back and pretty much oly get to play on friday nighths and weekends i have a crystal clearpoint of view of the problem of horse racing
it's not slots, it's not even takeout. it's not field sizes, it's not turf, it's not dirt, it's not polytrack, it's not bad jockeys, it's not a lack of stars, in reality it's not even drugs, though none of the above helps any
it's just damn inconvenent.
I mean, on a normal day I get up at about 6am, work until about 4-5pm, go to the gym, hit up an NA/ AA meeting at 7pm and i get home at 8pm and the only horse racing on is the saddle club or HRTV breeders cup reruns, or chalres town which justi \sn't an option lol. The tracks that i enjoy playing aren't available
Baseball plays during the day but baseball doesn't make their money off wagers and horse racing does, Tivoing a horse race is pointless.
Until, horse racing people decide that hey, we have to start running races when people can watch and wager on them, this is going to continue.
and I mean, even when I have the weekends i just can't shut off life and sit in front of a TV And gamble I have a girlfriend that i have to spend time with every once in a while or she will get pissy and throw shit lol, I like to spend time with the family every once in a while, sometimes i go out of town for the weekend just to get away.
and with the way i gamble, when i AM gambling everyday i might only make 10-15 wagers an entire week. last week i didn't bet a dime i didn't like anything anywhere. For me to make money i have to be doing it everyday to catch races.
HOrse racing people are in a bubble. They want me to make my life revolve around horse racing and usually, honestly,it does. but now it can't. for most pepple it can't.
If I were to buy.. Del Mar tomorrow, I'd only run on thursdays at 6pm - 10pm, Fridays 6-10pm, Saturdays 3-8 pm and Sundays 6'10pm (i like sunday night racing at del mar)
that's why i am more of a west coast gambler than east coast because by the time i get done working Belmont / Gulfstream are done.
If i were a betting man and I am, in the next 10 years tracks like Gulfstream, Belmont, are going to hurt something bad when the snowbird crowd starts to fade away
Keeneland is about the only track in america.. and the first week of Saratoga, that can get me away from everyday work at this point right now in my life. no one else has a chance. And even wiith Keenland only when something worth watching is running
I do play woodbine on wednesday nights, and remington park when it starts up net month i will play that every weeknight, lol assuming joy rose is still hosting there. just kidding, kinda.
make it more accessible. this isn't all that compicated. t

It really is more complicated than that BDW.
In many other states online gambling is complicated and the reason being is that there are casinos there can't afford to have simulcast wagering and that they claim that they have betting on horses inside the casino. Well they only allow betting on the Kentucky Derby.... which means that their cost/ profit margin is nil.
Thats why there is only Las Vegas casinos in the west that brings betting money into the industry and not the rest of the west. I am being general and looking outside of Vegas because I don't live there, I live where there are a ton of casinos that help the state profit or claim to thats why gambling online in some western states is illegal.
Now in Montana, Wy. Nv. the Dakotas, Idaho they don't have gambling on horse racing inside the casinos because its too expensive. What I was told from the book keeper was that they ( casinos) are being charged a fee for every race that they broadcast inside the casino and the majority ( 95%) of the casinos can't afford that cost and have a small amount of people bet. I don't know if its the same in Washington ( if people can come in, sit down, watch and bet the races. I have been to each state forementioned, inside their casinos to gamble and its the same reason.
We can't afford to cost of simulcasting each race when there isn't enough people there to bet to cover the cost of each race.
Now, like I said in some western states gambling online is illegal because there are casinos that are SUPPOSED to help the state profit. Well not all the time, but many people in Congress, FBI don't understand the profit and cost margins to run a casino. Therefor they look at the states that have casinos outside of tribal rule and brush us off.
Now slots are different. Remember how much is costs to install, manage and upkeep slots. Security is needed more so. Alcohol is consumed more often and the down time to install them.. Think about it

you know what karen, i love ya, and i totally see your point, and you make some great opints, but i really don't think it is.
You really don't realize just how much in the bubble you are in until you get out of it. The problem IMHO is not that complicated. Horse racing is not accessible enough. You can do all the tax breaks, takeout reductions, drug policies you want it doesn't matter if i'm at work when they are running the 7th at Belmont.
Perfect example Friday is opening day at saratoga, it doesn't matter who they put on the card, what they do the purses.. okay within reason if they put orb on the card or something like that i will figure something out but you get what i mean, there isn't anything that they can do to make me not busy on Friday. The only thing they could do to get me to wager more is to move up the post times to a time when i am not working.
I mean, i've wagered 2x more on charles town and mountaineer park than I have at gulfstream park this year.. it's not because of the prestine world class racing (don't put words in my mouth you get what i mean), it's beucase when i don't have anything to do on a friday night, that's all there is. I"ve wagered more money on Aussie racing than probably every track in america outside of santa anita this year.
I"m by no mean saying it's the ONLY thing wrong, but i guarantee you that it's the biggest. The economy is recovering because PEOPLE ARE AT WORK

case in point
mountinneer, hsa ONE race that anyone in horse racing that doesn't follow mountainner on a daily basis, cares about. the West Virginia Derby
you got ONE job. make sure people watch the west virginia derby. make sure people bet on the west Virginia
oh i know lol let's make sure that the West Virginia derby goes off at the exact same side as the Whitney Invitational. That's it! that will work!
i would have wagered on the race had i had time to look at the post parade, which i didn't do because i was playing the Whitney.
i am not even saying, you can't run a the same time as Saratoga. i wouldn't, but i'm not saying that. but you cant run your one damn race that i care about at the samet ime as the Whitney, a race that is going to have ramifications for the rest of the year in the biggest division in the country
this is what is wrong with horse racing.
