It was an impressive win for the bunny. Lugging in quite a few times through the lane, he never interfered with his competition and rallied strongly to easily draw clear at the wire. Although he won easily, his connections had him scoped as a precautionary measure....seldom done outside of America and the first time for these connections. They were surprised to find their star runner bled a level 2 of 4. After a discussion with their vet they realized he must have bled previously, only they never knew it because he bled internally. The vet also told them, every time an animal bleeds, there is a cumulative effect that can increase the severity of EIPH each time it occurs, therefore he would suggest constant monitoring and treatment after workouts and races. The vet explained this precautionary scoping could prevent these animals from getting past the level one category. Further the vet suggested the bunny should undergo 5 days of antibiotic therapy to prevent secondary infection from the category 2 bleeding in his lungs.....especially needed since they missed the earlier EIPH episodes because they didn't scope him. The vet also cautioned they should give the bunny a couple weeks off with only light training as another serious EIPH episode could scar his lungs and render the bunny useless for this type of competition. After weighing their options and the vets advice, the bunny's owner and trainer decided he will leave the Netherlands and is expected to race next at Yonkers sans Lasix. Or I guess.....there's always rabbit stew:>)TJ
