A hypothehtical about Dr Fagar

Postby bdw0617 » Thu Jan 30, 2014 8:55 pm

So today I'm out drinking with a good friend of mine and he's a horse guy and we get to talking about horses, and the topic of dr fagar comes up. I must say, this is a question I'v enever heard before and we had a good 15 min debate on this

If you were the owner / trainer of Dr Fagar and you got to run him in the prime of his career, right now, what breeders cup race do you point him to?

I literally, do not think he can be beat at a mile. by any horse to ever step foot on a race track. That would be easy money. He could win the turf mile most years. He could win the sprint most years. He is good enough to win the classic probably 7 out of 10 / 8 out of 10 years but that's not his best distance, but that's the real money. But you only got 1 shot in his true prime. With HOY on the line, with bragging rights on the line, stud deals, what do you do?

I'd go with the classic assuming it was ran at sanita anita. If it were a deeper track like Churchill I'd go with the mile.

First thing I'd do is call him by his correct name. It's Dr. Fager.

Dirt Mile - more bang for stallion market as it proves his brilliance.

Of course the competition would also influence your choice - cross enter him and then see which race comes up best for Dr. Fager.
A difference of opinion is what makes horse racing and missionaries.

Dr. Fager , The best ever

In my opinion he was the best ever and could have beaten any horse that ever raced at any distance. He was not distance limited as evidenced by a track record at 1 1/4 miles at aqueduct beating Damascus etc.

I would have placed him in the Classic.

Interestingly, Dr. Fager did not carry any strains of Phalaris in his pedigree.

BDW - i think your analysis ex post facto is right on. But with a living horse depending on how he's training, etc. I would see how he was coming into it and decide that way. He could have won the Sprint or the Turf as well, especially at SA.
