I am crying for that guy! It was a bad DQ, no contact just a bit of herding...makes one think the stewards (state employees) were in league with Gulfstream Park.

Hi Hoss,
I was thinking the same thing. Yet we see all this talk about integrity in horse racing and the drug and suspension issue's being spelled out and used uniformly throughout the industry. One of the biggest problems in horse racing is the DQ process. There is no strict adherence or uniformity to DQ rules in the industry. Many stewards read too much into the rules and many ignore a safety infraction saying that it didn't matter in the races outcome. This is so unfair and the lack of consistency is doing as much if not more harm to the integrity of racing as anything else. If there is a safety infraction the horse should be taken down, even if he won by ten. If the horse he impeded would have gone down and rider and horse were injured, they wouldn't hesitate about the DQ. The stewards at GP went to the intimidation rule to take this one down...a seldom used infraction, leaving too much discretion to the stewards when adjudicating this rule...not good, as in this case. Then they allow others to make serious contact and because they win by many they allow it to stand....saying it wouldn't make a difference in the outcome of the race. Very annoying since that isn't the issue....the issue is about safety and keeping a lid on dangerous riding tactics. The stewards and their rules for DQ's need to be the same and uniform consequences throughout the country for the same offence. Here is the statement the GP stewards issued concerning the costly DQ. TJ
“A horse must maintain a straight path down the lane so as not to impede, interfere or intimidate another horse. [Collinito] did not maintain a straight path and was not clear and put the other horse on his heels, forcing the jockey to stop riding twice and possibly costing him a position.”

Hi TJ:

Reading your comments reminded me of when I was rubbing horses at Gulfstream in the mid 1980's. Angel Cordero was the king and literally muscled his way through horses. Because they knew Cordero would "make a hole" some jockeys would make room for Angel when he yelled for it.

I don't remember the stewards taking him down for contact, much less for impeding, interfering etc.

Back then they called it "Race Riding."

Hi Hoss,
Yep, I remember when Cordero and Codex interfered with Genuine Risk in the Preakness. That was a true case of intimidation, more so then what happened in this terrible call at GP. They always parted the water for Cordero back in the day:>) Watch the race DQ below. TJ

The Codex v Genuine Risk was indeed a bad "no call" - just like the bad "no Call" when the great filly Goldikova knocked Get Stormy sideways at the 1/8 pole in the 2011 BC Mile (Goldikova finished 3rd but should have been placed behind Get Stormy). I love Goldikova but she clearly initiated contact and Get Stormy almost went down. Watch it again on Youtube.

Watching the replay of Sunday's 12th race at Gulfstream makes me more certain that Saez rode a good race when swinging a bit wide, while Lopez rode a poor race, second guessing his initial decision to go outside and thereby losing all chance to legitimately win.

In my opinion if Lopez commits to the outside and stays committed, then Saez either stops his outward drift or has to continue which would be a clearcut disqualification. The stewards were wrong on this one.

Hi Hoss,
Lopez' horse was lugging in a couple times, that's what cost him the race (he was hammering him left handed trying to make him stop it), then he took him outside and hand rode the horse and that's when the horse responded with a strong finish. Didn't look to me that it had anything to do with the drifting out of Saez' horse. Might have more to do with keeping the rainbow pick six alive. They make a lot of money with that gimmick bet. Only 40% of the total handle on that bet is carried over daily and in order to win the bet, you must be the only person with a winning ticket on that combination.....very hard bet to win and when this person did win it, they took it away from him/her with a questionable call. The Questions are:

Did the 12 horse interfere with the 13 horses progress in the strech...

Answer ...

Did the 13 horse gain on the 12 after losing momentum only to lose by a narrow margin...

Answer ....

Could the 13 horse have won if those infractions had not happened in the stretch....

Answer.....

Then that's the reason for the DQ.

I think the biggest contributing factor is the 13 horses was gaing atr the end and they had no choice but to DQ...

Hi TJ:

I know there is great incentive for Gulfstream to keep the Rainbow 6 carrying over & growing (which is why I am playing it tomorrow w friends), but the stewards are employees of the State of FL, not Gulfstream. Don Brumfield is one of the stewards and I know him to be a straight shooter.

So although it is easy for us to cry "conspiracy" (and my initial missive suggested it), I do not think it is a conspiracy. I believe it to be merely a horrible DQ decision o the part of the stewards. They are human, they make mistakes, some are worse than others.

Now while discussing bad calls by officials, I am not a Syracuse fan but the charge call made with 10 seconds to go in the Duke game was horrific! Let the players decide a game like that in the last minute, unless it is an obvious, almost flagrant foul. Should have been a "no call", would have tied the game, Duke ball with 10 seconds to go. Nothing unfair about that.

Hi Hoss,
Yes, I agree Brumfield is a good man....I wonder if he was in the booth at that time? Yet the DQ made no sense and if Brumfield was there, he could see the horse who they put up was lugging in. The rider never stopped riding, he was trying to pull his horse out because he was lugging in....if he was impeded and worried about running up on heels he would have taken a sharp hold of the horse with both hands....not just tugging on the right rein, which was the case. Had he been closer to the 12 when he lugged in very badly before the wire he would have clipped heels and went down....and it would have been his own fault. That's when he hit him sharply a couple times left handed....then moved him outside, stopped hitting him and he responded as he should have through the lane if he wasn't lugging in. In my opinion, it was the lugging in that kept that horse from winning legitimately. There was talk that Ritvo was on the horn in the paddock while the inquiry was going on...that had something to do with the conspiracy theory that is all over the internet....but I will agree with you and "can" the conspiracy theory also :>) TJ

Hi Hoss,
Don't make me blush:>) Here's what the horses owner had to say about it, very gracious in his statement...I doubt the poor player who had the ticket would be as kind:>) TJ

Collinito is our horse and as much as I disagree with the call I don't believe for a second that any conspiracy is involved here . I was in the winners circle and yes Tim Ritvo was on the phone but it didn't seem like he was agitated or trying to influence anyone . He actually explained that someone had an even bigger reason than us for wanting the horse to stay up and to me he didn't seem like he was rooting against us . The stewards made a call and it is what it is . I don't agree with it but I understand both sides of that coin and it didn't go our way this time . I do not believe anyone should be accused of any illegal behavior . A call was made and that's it .. we all have to move on . Our horse came back fine and we will fight again another day .

its why i don't play horizontal wagers (At least seriously), as soon as you make your bet everyone wants a carryover. ever watch TVG and like i there is a carryover they will be talking about it and like 10 seconds after the first race of the pick 6 they are hopping for a carryover lol its like well screw you too.

Well I played the Rainbow Pick 6 with a couple of friends yesterday, total ticket $129.60. We won 4 of the 6 races, ran 3rd in one of our losses and 2nd & 3rd in the other loss. Close but....at least the stewards did not knock us out!

Yep we'll try again today, but I think if we don't hit it today (need a lot of luck) we will not play again until the last day of the meet. Today's card looks a bit tougher to handicap than yesterday's, but that is probably just my opinion.

Good luck everybody.

hypothetically speaking if i were going ot play it would be on days where i could single 3 of the 6. like i knew i liked 3 horses already going in the day. then it kinda makes sense.

lol if that happened to me, there would be a movie on Netflix called "assault on gulfstream park". i would go postal.
