fastest final 3/8
Who ran the fastest final 3/8 over a dirt track at 9 furlongs (Derby prep races) in history?? Note: your answer must be a horse that raced in a 9 furlong prep race before the Kentucky Derby.

I know it wasn't Vicar's In Trouble.

Hi Cree,
I think Stan is talking about in all the Derby's....not this one. It's pretty much impossible to know without an archive of Derby past performances for every runner in the field. Since many horses, other then the winner, will run a faster 3/8ths then the actual race winner in any given race. TJ
Re: fastest final 3/8
Cree: I was talking about the fastest final 3/8 ever run in a 9 furlong prep race (not the Derby itself).
OK, I will give the answer: Strike the Gold in 1991 ran the last 3/8 of the Blue Grass in 35 2/5 seconds. I believe that was the fastest 3/8 ever run in a 9 furlong prep race.
The fastest final quarter in the Derby was run by Secretariat who ran the last quarter in 23 seconds flat.

Re: fastest final 3/8
Oh sorry, I didn't read that right at all.
I would never have guessed Strike the Gold, the early 90s were lost on me. Was he the favourite that year? I can't remember.
The Secretariat fact I definitely had up there in my encyclopedia.

Re: fastest final 3/8
Cree: Strike the Gold was not the favorite, probably because at that time his dosage index was 9.00. He went off at 9-2 as third choice behind the favorite Hansel who was 5-2 and Fly So Free the second choice at 3-1.
Re: fastest final 3/8
I think the final 3/8 mile in even a race of a mile is helpful and significant in predicting success at 10f. Obviously 9f is even better. And yet, you seldom hear anyone speak of it. I wish this statistic was more readily available. They give the splits in quarters and you have to do the math. I'm much more interested in the final 3/8 than I am the first or second or third quarter.
