Upstart

Upstart looked pretty good in the Holy Bull, but I wouldn't call him a shoo-in for the Derby yet. See http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints.

Upstart looked very impressive winning, and got a very nice Beyer number. The colt has never run a bad race, and seems like there is room to improve. One thing I noticed about him, and it might have just been my eyes, but it appeared in the stretch like he really lifts his knees up highs.
I question his pedigree to get 10 furlongs as well, mostly because of the 2nd dam being by Housebuster.
I like him though, and I hope he continues to do well. Violette is a respectable trainer, would be neat to see him win with a NY-bred.

I really like this horse. He has done nothing wrong. He has natural speed to put himself in good position in a race and also has a great acceleration. Here is my pedigree analysis on him. I think the distance part lies especially in the second and third dam sire, and with Deputy Minister and Vice Regent he gets plenty of stamina. He also gets it from his dam sire, Touch Gold. And his sire Flatter produced Flat Out, winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup twice at a 1 1/4. I see no problems for him going 10 Furlongs.

Thoughts on the Fountain of Youth? I really am not sure if I like any of these horses coming out of this race. Upstart's trainer wasn't sounding incredibly confident before the race, but he finished first on class.... the DQ was odd, the race was odd.
I look elsewhere for my Derby horse.

I agree with you Cree. Up to now, seems to me like this year's Derby winner will be coming
from another racing paradigm other than this one.

Upstart took about :34 to run the last 5/16 and was weaving -- not reassuring at all. In contrast, International Star ran the last 5/16 of the Risen Star in about :30-4/5 and Mine That Bird Derby winner Where's the Moon went his final 5/16 in about :31-1/5. I blogged about the latter in "Hoofprints" both because he's a new face on the block and because he's from Courtly Dee's family (http://www.americanclassicpedigrees.com/hoofprints).

I found nothing to like in the Fountain of Youth. I'm prepared to be open minded on all of them, though, in case the race was just an anomaly.
