The filly Mo'ne as a foal: https://twitter.com/WOOKIE318/status/56 ... 09/photo/1
Mo'ne Davis is the little girl who played in the Little League World Series. The Jacksons must've wanted to name their Bernardini-La Ville Rouge filly after her and gotten permission. The Jockey Club wouldn't have just let them do it without that. At first I was very confused, but when I saw who they'd named the filly after, it was kinda sweet. She's a gutsy young lady. Hopefully the filly is too.
In other news, I'd heard someone say they thought La Ville Rouge looked pregnant in some pic they saw. I'd assumed it was an old shot and figured she'd been retired from breeding as I'd heard that rumor too. Turns out she didn't have a foal in 2014 but the BC nomination site has her bred to Bernardini for 2015. If there are indeed pregnant LVR pics out there, she's presumably still carrying it. Being January, it's totally understandable that we know nothing yet. I wish we had more in the way of pics for Mo'ne. I think they don't document and share as much these days, esp. since that full sister to Barbaro was aborted in December of that one year. It probably was a big let down and when LVR got pregnant in the future they were less eager to advertise it in case things didn't work out.

They wouldn't have needed permission to name it if the person is dead otherwise they need that persons signature on a waiver form.

Even if the person is deceased, the family may still be involved. There was a huge flap a few years back when someone wanted to name a filly after Sally Hemings, Thomas Jefferson's slave and mistress who bore him at least one child as confirmed by DNA testing. Even though the filly's owner had obtained a signed permission from a lady of that name, Jefferson's descendants raised grief over it and The Jockey Club refused to permit the naming.

Well it's a living little girl so they did. Even someone's not alive, if their name and likeness are managed by an estate, you're completely gonna get sued. Then there's the 'famous or notorious' clause in the naming rules (see the link below for a funny way around that). Not sure what that has to do with anything. They couldn't have named this horse without permission and they clearly got it. So...?
