Hollywood Park this past Sunday

Postby Moscow Burning » Tue Apr 26, 2005 4:25 pm

Watched all the Gold Rush races last Sunday at Hollywood Park. Two horses broke down and I am hoping to find out information on their conditions.

Race 6: Space Invader trained by Craig Lewis. Took a bad step leaving the turn, was pulled up and vanned off.

Race 9: Slewsbag trained by Marcelo Polanco. Eased in the stretch, unsaddled at the wire when broke down behind, vanned off.

I emailed Hollywood Park and haven't heard anything back from them. Is anyone here familiar with So Cal racing and maybe knows the conditions of these horses? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

MB,

Don't know about those two, but one dropped dead heading back to the barn.

per DRF:
Market Garden dies after B. Thoughtful

Market Garden, who finished seventh in the B. Thoughtful Stakes on Sunday, collapsed and died while being walked back to the stables, according to state veterinarian B. William Bell and track stewards.

Market Garden, a winner of 6 of 35 starts and $363,958, won the Pio Pico Stakes at Fairplex Park last September. Owned by Sid and Jenny Craig and trained by Bill Spawr, Market Garden was third in the California Cup Distaff and Monrovia Handicap at Santa Anita last year. She was claimed for $80,000 by the Craigs last July.

Bell said a necropsy would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

(Sorry to piggyback on your thread, Moscow - hope you find answers to your horses conditions.)

There were problems at Hollywood Park on Friday, 4/22, as well. The track was listed as fast, weather clear. A horse I follow, Scoresearlygale, was pulled up and vanned off after the 3rd race. The next race, Fountain Grove was pulled up, but walked off. In the last race, Durango Invader lugged out on the turn and was eased. Granted, these are all claimers, but is it common to have that many problems in one day? Does anyone know how Scoresearlygale is doing?

Thanks, everyone.

The cause of the breakdowns is to much racing, and the TB of today are a combination of too many crosses of the same sire lines.

The TB of today are not the Iron TB of years ago.
If there was only 3 racing days a week the TB would have a chance to catch their breath.

Thanks, louis. Scoresearlygale was trained by Melvin Stute, but I believe she was claimed by Jeff Mullins in the race where she was injured. I certainly appreciate your efforts to find out how she's doing.

Thanks again.

I talked to Apo the foreman for C. Lewis and Apo said Space Invader took a bad step and injured his tendon. Space Invader will be turned out for 6 months then returned to racing.

Slewsbag injury was a bad one, so he was put to sleep. Thanks Marcelo Polanco the trainer of Slewsbag who gave me the bad news.

Scoresearlygale broke his leg when claimed by Jeff Mullins. After the race the original owner of Scoresearlygale ask the new owner after he was claimed if he would sell Scoresearlygale back to him. The new owner agreed and sold him back to the original owner. Scoresearlygale will be saved and will be retired from racing.

Thank You Ruben the exerise boy for Mel Stute for your help in reporting the above for Scoresearlygale.

Thank you Louis! How sad about Slewsbag, but happy the other two are going to make it.

I thought it was Turn-To that was the "culprit"...

Could also be that they were both Aries...

You are right Madelyn, I did mean to say Turn To - my apologies. One more generation further removed from anything now running must mean more relevance, heh?

Thank you, Louis, thank you! I'm so relieved that Scoresearlygale will likely get a good retirement. I really appreciate your efforts tracking down these horses.

Scoresearlygale has 10 crosses of (Phalaris) a shame, shame, shame on his breeder.

Space Invader has 7 crosses of (Phalaris) another no no.

Slewsbag is a product of Devil's Bag over a grand daughter of Seattle Slew, these two stallions are a recipe for a disaster.

Louis - are you becoming as fanatical as the Turn To guy?

Could not the link to Phalaris be explained simply by the predominance of his presence in the general population?
