I'll take my crow cooked Medium please

Postby KAL » Sat May 07, 2005 5:25 pm

Okay... in my infinite wisdom in defending FuPeg and Giant's Causeway, I gave some credulence to Northern Afleet and Afleet Alex, however I completely dismissed Closing Argument and his sire, Successful Appeal.

For those who have decreed that Northern Afleet and Successful Appeal are superior stallions and are producing superior horses... okay... your point has been made... you can start "crowing"... (however, I still don't completely agree... but, my opinion is running low on support).

I feel kinda' like Baffert when his horse got drilled by Candy Ride, "... okay they can take him back... they've proved their point...".

hi KAL

As always...you're a sport.

I submit that Successful Appeal is an aberration...

...and his son Closing Argument is one heck of an individual...and race horse.

Best to you.

Just didn't see Giacomo. Liked Closing Argument and Wilko. A good handicapper would have noted that G had a tough trip in the Santa Anita
Derby when finishing 4th just behind Wilko. Maybe next time.

After the derby when I was feeding, I recalled Gate Dancer's Preakness win. I think the race was similar to this Derby. Fight Over went the 1/2 in 45+ with Swale about 4 wide. Gate Dancer got up to win at the wire with the second horse a head or neck away. Of course Swale came back to win the Belmont.

KAL, I must admit yesterday evening I truly enjoyed spending a few quiet minutes with my 2 new Northern Afleet foals. I am usually the one who breeds to a stallion, and the next year they are shipped to Turkey or Idaho. Ill admit it felt GOOD to see Alex do what he does best, run his eyeballs out, and beat all them thar Kintucky bluebloods. I was so proud of him.

Forgive me, KAL, I have to take my moments when I can.

LOL, Halo! I think we all face those moments of doubt. I'm sure your time with your Northern Afleets was very special. Congrats on your astuteness in breeding to what I feel is an up and coming sire.

Halo, thanks! Like LSB, you made me laugh!

Heck, just a couple years ago I was unhappy I couldn't get deals put together which would have allowed me to send a mare to Silver Charm and another to Exploit. I did send one to Twining, bought mares in-foal to Expelled and Talkin' Man, and even owned a Lasting Approval for a few months. (Furthermore, I still like Tabasco Cat and consider Mountain Cat to have been under-rated and misunderstood). I also have a very, very nice '05 Artax colt... but, I don't think the move to New York will hurt him so much. The best, however, was the purchase of a fairly well-intended mare whose dam was still producing, being well-bred, and had a couple runners on track, including a very nice one with Bill Mott. I bought the mare, her dam was sold and shipped to Saudi Arabia (and hasn't been heard from since) and the 1/2 bro with Mott, died after completing his best work ever. So... I definitely know what you mean.

A more tragic side holds true for me also... for the last few years, it seems that every time I decide to use an older stallion, he either is retired or dies (or both). If I were into black-mail, I could probably make a fortune by charging farms a "protection fee" to not include their older stallions in my plans.

On the other hand... let's not be so hard on Idaho...
Wasn't Black MacKee in Idaho... I was told he would nick well with one of my mares. We run a commercial operation. With all due respects for the son of Captain Courageous and his outstanding % of stakes horses... I quickly dismissed that "pedigree expert". But, I must admit, I did smile every time I heard of a Black MacKee winning a race. Oh... and Idaho also gave us Gary Stevens, which I am sure my wife would think is something worth noting.

It should be pointed out that the actual WINNER of the Derby, was a Kentucky-bred... and the year after your foals turn 3, it looks like the future Afleet Alex's and Closing Argument's will be Kentucky-breds as well. Of course, when they win, they will be expected to do so with "Unbridled Spirit".

You are blessed to have the two Northern Afleets and I hope they are as well balanced as their sire. I think you will have quite a bit of fun with them in the near future. Best of wishes for straight limbs, sound minds, and limited scars.

Hey, by the way, I have found that Crow tastes much better when accompanied by Woodford Reserve...

KAL, I know Giacomo is a KY bred, but kind of by default, as he's by the Florida boy Holy Bull. Holy Bull is kind of a red headed step child for a Kentucky stallion. I was referring to the Fusaichi Pegasus/Giants Causeway types that Kentucky loves to call its own. Seems like now Kentucky is claiming Giacomo its own, sort of as an afterthough, and certainly because, well, he DID win the Derby, so he now deserves to be called KY bred. You know what I mean?

At any rate, its all in good fun; was a great race, I was very proud of Alex, thrilled for Mike Smith, amazed at Zito's great attitude afterwards, and thanking god that once again that after 20 horse bumper cars, all horses came back on all 4 legs.

Sometimes I hate watching the Derby, but I have to....

Kal:

Thanks for defending the honour of Idaho racing.

Nowadays Idaho truly does feel like the Siberia of the thoroughbred world; Especially now that the status of Les Bois Park is in legal limbo. Shouldn't dwell on that, as it just pisses me off thinking about it. Hopefully the good folks at Capital racing can win their legal fight with the current leaseholder and get the track up and running later this year, or next.

Thanks for the tip of the hat to Gary Stevens. I still have great memories of watching Gary ride at Les Bois when he was just a teenage apprentice jock. I tell you, it was money in the bank betting on his mounts. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think one summer his on the board percentage was in the neighborhood of 75-80%

I think Idaho can't take credit for Black MacKee, I believe he stood the majority of his stud career in Montana. Though I may be wrong, as I often am.

All the best to you, Shergar (CR)
