According to the Bloodhorse online the receiving barn at Indiana Downs is in quarantine after the IHRC was notified of possible strangles.
From the online article at <http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=28215>
"Some horses at Indiana Downs are being tested for strangles after two of them showed symptoms of the equine respiratory disease in the receiving barn May 19. Live racing subsequently was canceled for the evening."
".....all horses in the barn are being tested as an added precaution. Upon the order of the state veterinarian, the receiving barn was quarantined pending a review the afternoon of May 19. Further recommendations or a change in the quarantine parameters may occur, officials said."
This is a huge blow to Indiana, as there are many horses that ship up from Lexington and are stabled in the receiving barn. If the test are positive, it could have far reaching effects into Kentucky training centers. It will be interesting to see if these are truly ship in horses, as there are several TB trainers housed in the ship in barn as overflow from the regular barns.
Indiana Downs Ship-in Barn Quarantined

It doesn't have to be a huge blow, as long as they deal with the problem, which it appears they are willing to do. They have already made arrangements for the ship-in horses to be stabled elsewhere and live racing is back on for tonight. So, if someone from Kentucky or Ohio or Indiana or anywhere else wants to ship in, they will still be able to do so.
As I understand it, the biggest problem as it relates to racing was that the pony horses and outriders horses are stabled in the ship in barn. They were lining up off-site pony/outrider horses yesterday, hopefully they got enough. If not, those TBs will have to just walk to the gates by themselves, I suppose!
Seems there's a lot of backside problems going around... Florida, Churchill Downs, now here. I would imagine that rules will be changing in many of these states after the problems that have surfaced over the past several months. Indiana Downs already changed their policy to "health papers with temp. noted within 24 hours of arrival" for horses entering the track this year... I wonder what it will be next year? Maybe they'll have a vet stationed at the gate!

Further to that, though, I have friends who are trainers at Churchill... Many Trainers Do Not Vaccinate.... EVER... hence the outbreak of Rhino. How Dumb Is That???
I think there will come a time that a racehorse will have to have a Passport. A permanent document started at birth that records all health treatments; without vaccinations they will not be permitted in the stable gate. It is just Ridiculous, with the amount of travelling racehorses do, they do not have the same care and/or requirements that showhorses do.

So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....
madelyn, as I understand it the current outbreak of EHV at Churchill is not the Rhino that you can vaccinate against but a variant of the EHV virus that has no vaccine available and that causes neurological problems.
Since there's no vaccine, horses in the quarantine barns are being treated with an anti-viral medication called Acyclovir.

Having health papers in hand issued within the previous 24 hours is certainly a good start. However, the tracks actually have to look at them, or people will learn they can sneak through. I know Indiana is requiring them, but they actually haven't ASKED for them since the first week of racing (at least they haven't with us in our numerous trips since the first week). They didn't even ask for them Wednesday after the quarantine had been announced at Churchill (and yes, we carry them at all times).
Personally I think at some point it will come down to having a state vet examining all horses as they get off the trailer. I know it would increase costs, but I think it could ceratinly catch some illness as well. Hopefully the tracks, vets and trainers can get this sorted out in short order. If trainers fear shipping-in, the racing indusrty will certainly be effected.

I wholeheartedly agree that the security folks need to be better about checking paperwork... and knowing what they're supposed to be checking! Indiana Downs is not very good about this, and we've complained about that before. I think most of the people at the gate want to do a good job, but several of them have no idea what they are supposed to be looking for.
However, I would imagine Churchill Downs and Tampa check their paperwork, and it didn't stop the flare-ups there. Maybe they will have to have a vet check every horse at the gate. I wouldn't mind one bit, if it helps keep my horses protected when they're there.
We have some horses stabled there, but we're shipping one in tonight... actually, she's probably already there. I'm headed out the door right now. I will NOT be happy if we get there and they cancel racing... although, if some in her FULL race want to scratch so she has less competition, I won't complain!
