Wilko out

Postby StrawberryFelidos » Thu May 26, 2005 9:40 pm

Damn shame, I say...This horse has a lotta guts, although his body just doesn't seem as strong as the will. First there were the quarter cracks, then the bleeding, then the ankle chip(s?)...
It seems as if time off might've been the better thing for him, although it's hard to tell- he might not have held-up on a light campaign, either. But it always seemed as if the connections were rushing to heal him in order to reach the next event (this crack isn't quite healed but we'll run anyway...well, he got another crack, he'll probably be better by the next race...well, not quite, but he tried). Kinda like Rockport Harbor, only Rocky had more trouble his way.

Wilko was pushed to the max, he was a guinea pig for their owners as they used him and abused him to seek the laurels of the TC.

Shame Shame on them, as the welfare of our TB comes 1st.

I know I've seen it before, this forcing a square peg into a round hole business when it comes to Triple Crown races. It leads to a kind of insanity... Running some horses in poor form or varying health in the hopes that they can overcome, running other horses at distances they can't handle or on surfaces they don't take to...
:x  And then the promising young ones retire early, or they're so messed-up that their spark is gone. I wonder how many of these worn out/injured horses could have been great or even super atheletes if they'd been allowed to do what fits them?
Case in point, when I saw that the Kitten's Joy connections were working him on dirt in his early 3yo year I wanted to puke- fortunately somebody on that team had sense and kept him where he fits, we saw the results. What would have become of him if he'd been put on the Triple Crown trail instead? And Lost in the Fog, different story but same idea- what would he be doing now if they'd tried to run him 1 1/4?

AWise trainer will play his cards right, he will do what is best for his horse.

When the pushy and demanding owners tell the trainer what to do is where the trouble starts.

The owners pay the bills and they have the final say, but the trainer takes the blame for the TB to be pushed over the cliffs edge.

Then some of the owners take their TB away from their trainer and seek another trainer, in belief that the new trainer will turn their TB around and reap the harvest.

If these owners would just have more patience and let the trainer do what is best for these TB, these owners would not lose so many TB to injury.
