Well rested horse

Postby Rick » Wed Jun 15, 2005 4:18 pm

Just looking over the opening day card at Colonial for Friday and noticed that #4 Urban Cowboy in the 4th race last raced 1974 (January 21, 2000) days ago. He is entered at MDSPWT 1 mile and 1/4 on the turf. This will be his second race lifetime at 8 years old. Should be well rested. Got any stats on 5+ years layoffs

Don't know anything about this 'late bloomer' but find his pedigree kind of intriguing...what else can you go by when there's such a blank page performance wise????

Anyway I love his tail female to MAKE SAIL by AMBIORIX...good durable race mare [Winnings: 41 Starts: 7 - 5 - 6, $191,815 Won the Schuylerville Stakes, Alabama Stakes, Kentucky Oaks, Top Flight Handicap] and a decent 'productive sort' broodmare. She was bred on the cross that produced SHEET ANCHOR (AMBIORIX x DEVIL DIVER/ST. GERMANS/SWYNFORD) ....which brought back a top drawer line to SWYNFORD who is found in her sire, AMBIORIX's damline, via the great broodmare Lavendula. Some very clever breeding there. SHEET ANCHOR - after a decent race career - went on to be a signifigant sire of sires and runners in S. America. Looking at the rest of Urban Cowboy's pedigree I wouldn't count him out on the turf over the short to mile distances....just a wild guess not a "tip" by any shakes.

The more I consider his pedigree and the output of his female family - if this guy is fit enough for racing he certainly should be able to do a mile 1/4 and do it fast enough to get in the money.

I really like his pattern of inbreeding top to bottom for Turn To, Alibhai and Lavendula via Source Sucree and Ambiorix (with the Swnyford thing I mentioned above further back on the dam's side).

Now....I'm anxious to see how he runs!

I didn't see this post till now - well after the fact. I looked up the race, and he finished a closing second, at 29-1. Guess you were right about the distance not being a problem, Jellac ! Interestingly, he is trained (and owned) by Dale Jackson, who I believe is a steeplechase trainer. A steeplechase trainer entering a horse in flat turf race at 1-3/8 miles and up is always a factor to consider. Of course half the trainers in that race were steeplechase trainers, so not much of a betting angle there!

Still, I would imaine a jump trainer would be more willing to put an 8 year old back in training. I wonder what the story behind the layoff was...

Well, at least they don't want to lose him. If he has been steeplechasing...he should be fit for the race.
