Blues and Royals, RIP

Postby StrawberryFelidos » Thu Jun 16, 2005 6:25 pm

I just read on the Thoroughbred Daily News that Blues and Royals was euthanized after suffering colitis- I am very sad to hear that since he was so electrifying in his last start, beating the tar out of the UAE Derby runners. I very much wanted to see him run against Bellamy Road, but I guess that wasn't meant to happen.
Isn't it strange that formerly UAE-based Balletto was just retired with a colon problem and now this? The UAE runners are facing very unfortunate problems in America this year, and very close together...
What is "colitis" and is it anything like the "impacted colon" issue that Balletto faced?

hi StrawberryFelidos

Blues and Royals...what a talented racehorse. I liked your description of his winning performance in the UAE Derby as "electrifying."

I'll remember him that way.

Best to you.

Colitis in humans is a really chronic, spastic colon and diarrhea. Found this site for colitis in horses. http://www.crohnsdiseaseguide.info/caus ... sinhorses/

colitis

Colitis can be caused in a hind gut fermenter, like the horse, by over enthusiatic use of antibiotics. Kills the gut flora. Remember the Colitis X breakouts in the 70's. That came down to using tetracycline in horses. Mary Syers
