Runing in a race, then leaving?

Postby Slew83 » Thu Jul 07, 2005 7:29 pm

After a horse has run in a race, when can that horse leave the track grounds? Also if a horse entered into a race how long meaning days or hours does the horse have to be on the track grounds?

On a race and return, usually the horse is cooled out, watered, and whistled down (to make the horse urinate), loaded in a van and taken home, 1-2 hrs after the race. The horse needs to be there several hours prior; pre-race meds have time restrictions ie: four hours before the race, the state vet needs to see the horse, etc. Race and return is pretty much an all-day thing, for a couple of minutes of excitement! I have gone along on a lot of race and returns, I think they are fun. I got to help/hold a horse get a lip tattoo, help saddle in the paddock, etc. etc.

Madelyn you're crazy. I was running from the farm last summer and man oh man, it got tiring. You're right, all day affair and then some. I am much happier with shipping in the day before *if* I don't have a stall there that I can come in a few days before to work on the track the last time before the race.

Not me....I love running off the farm! It's exactly 17 miles from me. Must be there no later than 4 hours before post time for lasix. Usually leave 1-1.5 hours after the race once my horse is cool. Makes for a long day but I love having the horses on the farm!

haha, you can tell I hang around the backside waaay too much, the grooms and or trainer actually whistle in a pattern to get the horse to pee. First time I was riding along in a race and return with a trainer, before he let me in the truck he asked "Can you whistle?" I don't know about all the tracks, I have only been to River Downs, Turfway Park, Hoosier Park, Indiana Downs, Churchill Downs, Ellis Park, Keeneland, etc. and they all seem to do it there...when one of the crowd gets tired the next one starts whistling.
