Was this a good time for a work?

Postby ZiaLand » Mon Jul 25, 2005 8:51 am

I'm clueless about times/distances/surfaces for works. Can someone tell me if this is a good time (even though, as it was recently pointed out, workout times often mean nothing).

Beacon of Hope
Date: July 25, 2005
Track: KEENELAND
Distance: Five Furlongs
Time: 1.03:20 Breezing
Track Condition: Fast
Surface: All Weather Training
Rank: 1/1

Also, is there somewhere on the net I can go to educate myself about this data?

Thanks,
Laurie

Since we already discussed what constitutes a "good" work, I assume what you're asking is, is that a fast work? Assuming normal track conditions, the answer is no, not particularly. I had a filly at Keeneland for most of the spring and 1:03.2 isn't a fast time for five furlongs on that training track.

As a very general rule of thumb, when a horse works 12 second furlongs, it's going pretty fast. A fast five furlong work would be more in the range of 1:00 to 1:01.

hi ZiaLand

Following are the works today (7/25/2005) at Keeneland

KEENELAND - July 25th, 2005

Distance: Four Furlongs
Breed Type: Thoroughbred
Surface: Dirt
Track: Fast
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horse Name.................Time.Notes.Rank

GALLOWS (KY)..............47.60 h 2/3
REGAL REPROACH (KY)..48.00 h 3/3
VISIONARY (KY)............47.00 h 1/3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Distance: Five Furlongs
Breed Type: Thoroughbred
Surface: All Weather Training
Track: Fast
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horse Name....................Time.Notes.Rank

BEACON OF HOPE (KY) 1:03.20 b 1/1
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Distance: Five Furlongs
Breed Type: Thoroughbred
Surface: Dirt
Track: Fast
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horse Name...................Time.Notes.Rank

BOOM BABY (KY)...........1:05.60 b 4/4
CANAPE (KY).................1:04.00 b 2/4
GATO PICHON (ARG)......1:04.00 b 2/4
MAY NIGHT (FL)..............1:03.40 b 1/4

Your horse was the only one that breezed (b) on the All Weather Surface...therefore it was the fastest work (1/1). The time appears to be quite good in relation to the 4 horses that worked on the Dirt.

The 3 horses that worked four furlongs on the Dirt did it handily (h) and were moving faster that ALL 5 horses that breezed (b) 5 furlongs whether on All Weather or Dirt.

Hard to gauge it though with so few horses working...and only your horse on the All Weather.

hi ZiaLand

If you click on  Equibase then go to the website...

there's plenty of information which you might find useful.

At Equibase...there is a listing (toward the top and left of center) titled Free Information.

Under that listing you will find offered:

Free Information
Get Official entries, results
workouts, track changes and more.

Select WORKOUTS...then click GO...and you can select from a long list of racetracks (and training facilities) the workouts on a specific day.

After selecting the specific Track and Date...you will see the Horses Names (listed alphabetically)...the official Time...a column titled Notes indicating b (breeze) or h (handily)...then a Rank (indicating how a horse worked compared to the others at the same distance on the same surface at that same track on the same day).

Best to you.

Respectfully

Ryeno... I'm with LSB... I think he should have gotten extra credit for the answer.

I also like a "stock" answer given by a certain West Coast trainer whenever anyone asks what his horse worked, "... about a second slower than Bafferts...".

Zialand, at 1.03 they certainly weren't asking for much. Sounds like just a good little breeze... there certainly isn't much that can be read into it... without seeing it. If they were pushing her pretty good and that was all they got, then I would be massively worried, but I really doubt this is the case.

Hi

Works can be confusing unless you are familiar with a trainers patterns, and what they are trying to accomplish. In that context, the work you are asking about might have been very good. Most any decent horse can record a fast work if pushed. I had an old trainer who worked his own horses, and he weighed around 160 lbs. If you ever saw a 1:02 work, you knew that the horse was fit and ready to fire.
