Closing Argument returns to the work tab at Saratoga
Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Closing Argument breezed a half-mile at Saratoga Race Course on Wednesday in his first official workout since finishing ninth in the Preakness Stakes (G1) in May. The son of Successful Appeal was timed in :49.99.
"That’s exciting, good news for the day," trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. "We were giving him a little break and he had little tiny setbacks since then. He had a couple of weeks of R&R and then a couple weeks of trying to figure out how to get him back going."
Closing Argument, winner of the Holy Bull Stakes (G3 in February at Gulfstream Park in his sophomore debut, has been training, but McLaughlin has not worked the colt because he has not been real pleased with the progress Closing Argument has been making.
"We just took a little bit longer to get back to working than we ideally wanted," McLaughlin said. "So it was nice to get him back on the work tab today."
McLaughlin said the Travers Stakes (G1) on August 27 at Saratoga Race Course is doubtful but not completely out of the question. The more likely scenario would be the Pennsylvania Derby (G2) on September 5 at Philadelphia Park. From there, depending on how Closing Argument is faring, McLaughlin said a path to the Breeders’ Cup would be mapped out.
"That would be great if he was up for it and had had a race or two under his belt before then," McLaughlin said. "He’s a really nice horse and luckily he doesn’t have any major issues, just a couple of minor ones that we have been struggling with. But he looks great, is doing well, and he worked well. We will make a plan once we work him.
"But it’s nice to get him back to work," McLaughlin said of Closing Argument, who has won three of nine career starts and earned $986,984. "The vacation is over."--Warren Alber

Thanks for the update. This is a nice colt -- I wish him a fine racing career and hope he goes on to run well at four, but he's welcome to settle down in Florida anytime he gets to the point where he's ready to start meeting the ladies!
