Quick Question Furlong?

Postby Inyureye » Thu Oct 27, 2005 4:27 am

Will someone kindly tell me how many furlongs to a mile? Thanks
Some people are like slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when pushed down the stairs.

8. A furlong is 1/8 of a mile.

Thanks. I once knew this. No guarantees on retention, here, though.

Sort of related... what is the background for 1mile and 70yards as a distance? The '70 yards' thing kind of puts a kink in a lot of my (home grown) programs

Thanks

I think it has a lot to do with the circumference of the track. On some 1 mile ovals if the finish line is pretty close to the first turn, you see the 1 mile & 70 distance run. It gives the horses in the outside posts a bit of a straight run before the first turn. Why 70 yards, I have no idea. I have seen a mile and 40 yard races run too. Can't remember what track(s)

Someone with more knowledge may be able to tell you why it's 70 yards. Heck, now I'm curious too.
