Artie Schiller wins

Postby Heidilady » Sat Oct 29, 2005 1:18 pm

Poor Funfair..tried to run on...I believe he's been put down..can anybody confirm that definitively?

1 Artie Schiller
2 Leroidesanimaux
3 Gorella

Gorella's nice..get her some running room and wow. See the only real favorite to win today was Folklore but lots of nice ones...I have to say with the exception of Wildcat Heir getting super leg weary and Funfair being too full of heart for his own good, it's been some awesome horses putting it all out there even if things don't go their way. Nice efforts and a few heartbreaks but awesome day of racing all in all.

Majestic Light, the sire of Claudius, is the broodmare sire of Artie Schiller. <perk>

I thought I had run across Artie Schiller's name in my pedigree research before.

Heidi, I don't think they came right out and announced it (or I missed the statement), but the announcers did offer "condolences to all the connections" and interviewed a track vet who said it was a bad fracture made worse by the horse continuing to run on and that nothing could be done.

He put bone throught the skin according to the vet. I would assume that they would have put him down on the track with that sort of injury. That was just a freak deal.

Funfair was taken off in the ambulance but it was assumed that he would have to be euthanized. Edgar Prado looked sick when he walked back. The extremes of racing are hard even on those who witness them regularly.

Nice to see Jimmy Jerkins in the winners circle, though, with a well deserved win.

I like Artie Schiller, have ever since the Virginia Derby when Kitten's Joy beat him- Artie took the lead, Kitten surged ahead, Artie fought back to be nearly on even terms (only horse I ever saw have the guts to do that to Kitten) and then the Kitty found another gear and put him away. When he fought that hard against the devastating Kitten kick, I knew he was a tough-battling horse with a lot destined to come his way. I still like Kitten better  but, I say, doesn't hurt the feline any to have one of his defeated rivals come back to kick some serious Breeder's Cup ass.

On a sadder note, I felt very bad for Funfair, who appeared to be a very honest, up-and-coming horse. I had him singled as one of the few who could challenge Leroidesanimaux (Artie, the filly and Singletary were the other three). Sickens me to hear that they likely weren't able to save him, he didn't deserve that ending, no horse does.

Is Artie S. a large horse? He looked like a TANK on TV, compared to the horses around him...
