horrible question re: fatal breakdowns

Postby TBforME » Wed Dec 28, 2005 12:13 am

I was just reading the Ruffian thread and it conjured up and image I had long repressed. I honestly do not know what year it was, but I want to say 80's. I was watching a race on TV (do not remember which one) but I do know it was a major one. As my memory serves me, it was a dark gray horse coming around final turn when a foreleg snapped literally in half. It was gruesome. Honestly, I know this sounds like the Go For Wand race (except I know she was not gray), but for some reason, I remember this as a dark gray horse.

Can anyone think of any other major televised breakdowns that could have happened in the 80's?

I may be just thinking of the Go For Wand race and not getting all the details right due to hardly being able to watch it was so horrific.

The only one that springs to mind for me is Izvestia....but that was the very early 90's, and as I recall he broke down behind.

When Holy Bull broke down it certainly looked like it was going to be a bad one but luckily it wasn't catastrophic but the way he pulled up sure looked like a Ruffian'esque injury.

One of the worst besides Go For Wand and Ruffian I ever saw was timely Writer (took out two other horses, one Johnny Dance died, one recovered), there was a grey filly near the lead in that one, Christmas Past; and Roving Boy. Roving Boy particularly sad because the horse was a champion 2 yo, I don't know why they even brought him back, he could have gone to stud at 3 (or 4 if he was injured too late).
