Badge of Silver Wins First Out on Turf

Postby StrawberryFelidos » Mon Jan 02, 2006 2:29 pm

That was surprising- pleasantly surprising :P

But now, by my estimation, it looks like they'd better retire him fast so that he can still get into the breeding shed (whenabouts does the covering normally start? I thought freshman stallion training started in November!). Or maybe they'll justy decide to keep him in training this season, at BloodHorse.com it sounded like they were "rethinking" their retirement plan after his surprise ass-kicking abilities on the turf.

Well, it is nice to see a horse run, and since he's not by a "big name" sire, I guess it would be tricky to garner big interest anyway. But if he keeps running Ramsey Farm will only have one stallion to stand this season...hmmm.

BOS has a grass oriented female family that will excell on the turf.

Frankel will find those turf races where BOS will roll sevens. Congrats and welcome back BOS.

Badge of Silver to try turf before retiring to Ramsey Farm

Multiple graded stakes winner Badge of Silver will make his final start in the San Gabriel Handicap (G3) on the turf at Santa Anita Park on January 1 before he retires to stand the 2006 season at Ramsey Farm near Lexington.

The five-year-old son of Silver Deputy out of Silveroo, by Silver Hawk, will stand for $12,500.
Badge of Silver, who has never raced on grass, finished eighth as the favorite in the Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) on November 26 at Aqueduct for trainer Bobby Frankel.

"Bobby suspects that he may have worked him too fast and that he just came up empty," said Ken Ramsey, who owns Badge of Silver with his wife, Sarah. "He’s bred on the bottom side for grass, being out of a Silver Hawk mare, so we’ll give it a shot and hopefully be able to say that’s he a graded stakes winner on dirt and turf."

Badge of Silver takes to the turf in front-running San Gabriel score

Badge of Silver became a graded stakes winner on turf with a front-running 2 1/2-length victory in the San Gabriel Handicap (G2) on Sunday at Santa Anita Park.
The victory vindicated owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s decision not to retire the five-year-old son of Silver Deputy following a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) on November 26 at Aqueduct.

Instead the owners and trainer Bobby Frankel opted to keep the Grade 2 winner on dirt in training and try switching to the grass to broaden his potential appeal as a stallion.

Badge of Silver moved quickly to the lead from the middle of the field and settled in along the rail under a firm hold from jockey Patrick Valenzuela. He set a moderate pace through six furlongs in 1:14.11 when Hendrix moved up to challenge.

Valenzuela let out a notch on the reigns and his mount responded by repelling the bid eagerly leaving the turn. Badge of Silver had plenty of stamina remaining and determinedly powered clear to a convincing triumph, completing the 1 1/8 miles on turf rated as good in 1:50.02.

"Bobby’s the greatest," Valenzuela said, referring to the training job by Frankel. "What can I say, man, from dirt to turf? He ran a great race. You saw him kick. Bobby had him plenty ready and he knew his action was good on the turf. He said, ‘He’ll run good. Don’t worry. Just ride him with confidence." And that’s exactly what I did."

Grade 3 winner Atlando (Ire) rallied from the inside to best Grade 2 winner Toasted by a length for second.

Two-time San Diego Handicap (G2) winner Choctaw Nation finished a non-threatening seventh in his first foray on the sod.

Badge of Silver has won seven of 14 lifetime starts and earned $770,892. He is out of the Silver Hawk mare Silveroo.

It's interesting because the TbTimes makes it sound as if BOS is definately being pointed to retirement, whereas the BloodHorse is hinting at something else:

Frankel Flashes 'Badge' to Begin Year

Making the first start of his career on the grass, the pacesetting Badge of Silver sped away from his rivals in the stretch to register a mild upset for trainer Bobby Frankel in the $150,000 San Gabriel Handicap (gr. IIT) on the turf at stormy Santa Anita Park Sunday.
Sarah and Ken Ramsey's 6-year-old son of Silver Deputy probably won the race in the opening three-quarters of a mile when he clicked off easy fractions of :23 2/5, :49 2/5 and 1:14 for jockey Patrick Valenzuela.

Valenzuela kept after Badge of Silver through the lane as they pulled away from the pack and they went on to win by 2 1/2 lengths over favored Atlando in a time of 1:50 for the 1 1/8-mile distance on a course listed as "good." It was the only race of the day on the Santa Anita turf, which has been pelted consistently by rain for the past two days.

"Bobby's the greatest, what can I say," Valenzuela said. "From dirt to turf? He ran a great race. You saw him kick. Bobby had him plenty ready and he knew his action was good on the turf."

The winner carried the co-high weight of 118 pounds.

Badge of Silver had won six of 13 lifetime races on the main track but had never tried the turf before Sunday. The dark bay was reportedly headed for retirement after the San Gabriel. He had raced just once since a sixth-place finish in the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) June 18, that coming in an eighth-place showing as the favorite in the Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct Nov. 26.

"We'll see how he comes out of this race," said Humberto Ascanio, Frankel's assistant, when asked about the Ramseys' plans for Badge of Silver. "You know, he ran so good today. We'll just have to see."
:?:

With the winner's share of $90,000, Badge of Silver increased his career earnings to $770,892.

Badge of Silver ($10.60, $5.20 and $3.60), the third choice in the field of nine, benefited from the scratch of Whilly, a multiple grade II winner who would have been on the lead as well.

Instead, Hendrix, ridden by Corey Nakatani, dueled early with Badge of Silver before settling into second while tracking the leader into the stretch. But as Badge of Silver began to draw away, Atlando, ridden by Martin Pedroza, and Toasted took up a futile chase.

The Irish-bred Atlando, the 5-2 choice with entry mate Don Incauto, was closing ground along the inside for Martin Pedroza but never threatened as they approached the wire. Atlando ($3.80, $2.60) was coming off a win in the Knickerbocker Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Aqueduct.

Toasted ($3.80), ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr., turned in an encouraging performance in his first outing since September for trainer Laura de Seroux.

Estavan finished fourth, folllowed by Don Incauto, Hendrix Choctaw Nation, Rhythm Mad and Burning Sun, another Frankel trainee who faded after vying with the leaders into the stretch.

The late-running Choctaw Nation, a multiple graded stakes winner on dirt was like Badge of Silver making his first on the grass. The 3-1 second choice in the betting was never a factor under Victor Espinoza.

It's all very interesting- and a tad confusing. We should be hearing the final decision any day now. I can definately see support for retiring him now, since his name just got back in the headlines and people will be thinking of him. Then again, it's a tad late in the season to stir new interest in booking, and with them delaying his retirement once, makes it appear more likely that they might do it again... we'll see!
