TRAINER JOHN SULLIVAN PASSES ON

Postby louis finochio » Wed Mar 22, 2006 6:53 pm

Trainer JohnSullivan died of cancer at 77. John's best TB were The Bart, 2nd to John Henry in the Arlington turf classic, and Forzando.

I will miss you John when I go by your barn, you were a real class person.
When you get to the pearly gate you will be welcomed by Charlie Whitingham, Laz Barrera, and Angel Penna.

Tell them Lou the Shoe always remembers them, Thanks for the memories John, may peace be with you and your family. Amen.

Lovely gentle Irishman, softly spoken , was very kind to me when I first arrived in California. I think he gave trainer Paddy Gallagher a start in this country and probably many more.So sad to hear of his passing.

Louis: It's wonderful that you've taken the time to pay tribute to your friend. I'm not familiar with this gentleman, but I know his spirit appreciates your efforts. There are many very special people working throughout the horse industry. It's wonderful that you two had crossed paths. I certainly remember THE BART. That was great race.

Life is something we all take for granted. John Sullivan was a class act and it was a pleasure to talk to him on many occasions.

John was from the old school of trainers and helped many of his irish countrymen get started in the US.

May you train many more TB John when you start your second life. Good Luck your friend Lou the Shoe.

When I was very young and just becoming interested in the sport, John Sullivan trained a good grass horse by the name of Wing Out. I remember Shoemaker and Wing Out just outlasting Quack in a grass stake (Lakeside) at Hollywood Park over thirty years ago. Quack was high weighted and heavily favored but Shoe and Wing Out got through on the rail and just held him off. Wing Out also ran well against Cougar II that summer as well.
