Apparently that's what Bandini carried and it just makes me grumble about unrelated issues. When you have trainers like Frankel pulling out of carrying 124 sometimes and the real competition isn't that many pounds away from them (and they expect colts to carry 126 in the Triple Crown) it's just a joke. I hear naysayers about handicaps all the time but I still maintain weight carrying used to be a sign of greatness because they've already shown they can get whatever distance just fine and other various obstacles were met. And steeplechasers can carry a lot more so it's bs to just say they can't handle it.
"Why get the best horse beat?" The best horse, in theory, would at worst finish in a dead heat with the rest of the field if they do it right so he/she still wins and responsible handicapping would include risk of the horse being unable to handle any more due to tendon injuries, etc. 117 is high weight? ha, try feather weight. I'd hate to see what the lightest horse carried. I'm a small person and even I'd have to skip breakfast for a few days to make that weight. I feel bad for the jockeys geez. It's really a human issue that I have a problem with when you're talking the less than premium G1 stuff. How many deaths from anorexia/bulemia or drug use is it gonna take? Grr.. forgive my rant but this is just obnoxious. And it's not Bandini's fault, he just made me think of the bigger picture.
"High weight 117lbs" = oxymoron?
