Bill, that sounds like a way to close the season at Emerald Downs with a bang!

Billy Turner was telling me about going with Seattle Slew to Longacres and mentioned that the race's namesake, Joe Gottstein (or maybe his son-in-law?) built an apartment for his mother right into the tote board. Too bad Longacres is no longer around.

Anyway, good luck to Sharper Edge! I'll see if I can come cheer him on.

Hi

I was at the track the day Seattle Slew came to visit (quite a thrill for me). I was racing horses at Longacres at that time and knew Joe Gottstein casually. They had a very nice place behind the toteboard, and they usually stayed right there during the meet. Joe was a very nice man, and was a regular on the backstretch early in the morning. He often visited the backstretch cafe.
Stoney is in pretty tough, but it's a feather in his cap to even be in the race. I hope the track isn't too wet.

He broke slowly, and languished at the back of the pack throughout in a very dull effort. Got beat at least 16 lengths on the sealed wet-fast track. In hindsight, not a very realistic spot for him. At least he beat the previously undefeated filly. Nice win by the You and I colt, Schoolin You, who is also trained by Sharper Edge's trainer, Jim Penney. Schoolin You should be even better at longer distances. Oh well, there's always next year for Stoney.

He will probably be off until spring. That will let him catch up with that big body. I located his dam, Lady Hawkster, in someones back yard and she was bred to a $1000 stud. A $1000 mare and a relatively new (at that time) stallion produced a vey nice looking fellow that sold for $16,000 at the WTBA Select Sale (one of the highest priced Snowbounds of the year). Not bad. I think he'll pay his way. A 2yo Snowbounfd filly won a stakes race at Turf Paradise the same day that Stoney ran.

Well, the big grey got his R&R, and will be making his 3yo debut in the Auburn Stakes at Emerald Downs on Sunday the 7th. He's been working very well with a couple of bullet works, so we're hopng for the best.

He ran a solid 3rd on his first try as a three-year-old, and came back to win decisively (by 2 3/4 lengths drawing out) yesterday at 6.5 furlongs.

He's going in the 9th today at Emerald. 8 furlong Allowance. He's the morning line favorite at 3-1. He should like the distance. Don't know if this jockey fits him though. We'll see.

Ran 4th, beaten 3 lengths. Way too far back early, and very wide on the home turn after being bumped at the start.

Sharper Edge is running Sunday at Emerald Downs in the Trooper Seven Stakes at 8 furlongs. Wish him luck.

Good luck Sharper Edge. Is this a good distance for him? And track wise, what's the surface like? Here in Spokane it has hardly rained at all the entire summer - everything is very dry.
