Smokie breaks his maiden!!!

Postby geowarrior » Thu Nov 02, 2006 8:13 pm

Omigod, it was so exciting. 1 mile MSW on the turf at Hawthorne. Citi Smoke, goofy as ever, must have run way more than that, he went so wide early, but came up running and with only a little head bobbing, romped his way to the front and won by a length. Although Oriental Rose broke her maiden a few weeks ago I missed the race because of my injured neck. But today I actually saw the replay only a few minutes after the race was done. What an absolute thrill!! First time in his fashionable white blinkers, when cantering back towards the paddock, he looked right at the camera - very flaky looking but totally cute. Sorry for being so effusive, but I'm new to this and can't seem to contain my excitement!!! :D :D :D

Congratulations! As my son used to tell me all the time (of course he stole the line from a movie) "Winning is so much better than losing!" Enjoy the ride :D

Thanks everyone. I've watched the replay on the Hawthorne website several times both for the thrill, and because he's so funny to watch. I think he will have a successful career, he showed so much talent, but even if he doesn't live up to all our expectations, I think his daft personality will ensure that his career will be highly entertaining.

He's not quite as bad (or dangerous) as Whirlaway was, but he sure looked like he was headed for the outside rail before he realised that the first turn was actually a bend where he was supposed to follow the other horses. He's young, though, he'll learn.

And yes Ben I know there will be sad times. Remember how upset I was when Gear It Up was injured at Mountaineer. (He is turned out at the farm, has been for a couple of months, but has recovered well and is expected to return to training in another three weeks or so).
