Sawmill Road at Oaklawn

Postby henthorn » Fri Feb 09, 2007 7:01 am

Sawmill Road is one of my home-breds, a three-year-old TX-bred by Hollycombe. He is racing on Sunday the 11th at Oaklawn, Race 1, PP1. It's a $7,500 claimer at a mile. He is Hop to It's second foal, the one she was carrying when I re-purchased her at the age of six. I had raced her, but she was claimed and retired to stud while she raced at Oaklawn at five.

You may recall that he's the one that I sold at F-T Texas yearling sale, when the consignor accidentally switched look-alike colts and sold the other one as mine. The consignor worked it out equitably, and was terribly embarassed. I was surprised the colt was able to start and win at two, since he had a large OCD lesion in his shoulder at the time of sale as a yearling. His mama didn't race until three, and papa not until five years of age. If he can stay sound and happy, hopefully he can improve with age, distance, and maybe turf or polytrack. :P

Oh my, what an incredible story. Can you remind me again what OCD is? May he come back sound, and I'm looking forward to following his career.

OCD or osteochondritis dessicans is a developmental abnormality that can occur in rapidly growing bones. It makes an area that doesn't mineralize normally, and can lead to fracture or arthritis, depending on location and training methods. Usually the best treatment is letting the colt grow with only a light training schedule until the skeleton is mature.

I didn't watch the race, but he didn't hit the board in his race. :?
