Stage Center gets one more Oaklawn start

Postby henthorn » Thu Mar 29, 2007 6:30 am

Stage Center gets one more Oaklawn start...before the stable moves to Prairie Meadows. She's in Saturday the 31st, 2nd race, post position 4, scheduled at 1:34pm CDT. Six furlongs, field of seven maiden fillies three and older, claiming price of $12,500-$15,000. (She's in for 12.5K).

We were hoping for a mile race, but horses are moving out to other tracks, and races aren't filling. Hopefully she'll get to move on to allowance company after this race at an easier track.

NOTE: For those who are afraid of claiming races and the possibility of losing your precious children to other owners: YES, my knee-jerk reaction after she placed (got 2nd place) in her last $15,000 MCl race was OUCH! at the tag of $12,500.

But I've made both good and poor business decisions in these situations for many years now, and I always recall the feeling of relief when my horse is unexpectedly claimed from the track. Suddenly the money troubles ease up, the vet and transport bills lessen, and there's a windfall in my horseman's account. And it almost always comes at a time when money is TIGHT and/or expensive decisions are being contemplated.

A bonus is that your athlete is competing in appropriately difficult or easy company, and has a better chance of a successful result (and the associated GOOD VIBES of being or producing a WINNER!):D

I can't afford to keep them all as pets or broodmares. So this takes the harsh choices somewhat out of my hands and shares it with the trainers and the potential claiming owners. I guess it's like your kids going off to the military or a new career. What happens is out of your control, but the cash flow balance improves, and you can concentrate on other priorities.

Good luck Henthorn.

I see what you're saying about claiming. I guess I just don't have the business head required for it.

Sorry for the delay in reporting, but my website connection has been screwy for the last couple weeks. The technical support guys finally figured it out, and hopefully it won't affect any other posters' access to the forum.

Stage Center ran in the slop at Oaklawn March 31, and got caught up in a three-way battle for the lead. The winner came through it like a champ, but the others fell back. Stage got a distant third, and fourth was way back there somewhere.

Stage Center was claimed from the race for $12,500, not profitable, but a fair price for her current demonstrated ability and pedigree. I think the new owners are training her at Louisiana Downs for continued racing. I hope they stretch her out and try turf, because she'll likely get better over time. Her sire Geri has had very few good racehorses, in N.A. or Japan.

In the earlier post I talked about the pros and cons of claiming races. I would have been happy to keep her in training, send her with the trainer's stable to Prairie Meadows in Iowa for the spring/summer, and hope she moves up the ladder there. She made just about as much money at Oaklawn as she spent during her time there, and her purchase price and show purse were a welcome addition to the bank account and cash flow.

Life goes on! Those monies and the cessation of her expenses will help alot with the stable as a whole.

She's the pretty chestnut filly in my avatar for awhile, with her exercise rider aboard at Remington Park.

Well, as long as you are happy, Henthorn. Let's hope she does well in the future.

Ditto, Geowarrior. If she goes on to be a champion or a superior runner, I'll be glad to say I bred her and started her off well, and congratulate the new owners for making such a wise claim. And her exploits will shed a good light on her dam and siblings for future sales value. Her older brother is stakes-placed and still racing at six. Her 4yo sister is a nonstarter, training at Prairie Meadows, and can hopefully succeed in restricted IA-bred and open company.

Wordplay probably has more pedigree value than did Stage Center, since her sire Alphabet Soup is already a successful stallion. I'll likely keep her in my broodmare band after her racing career is finished. All of Shake On It's progeny are pictured in the database. :)
