Bad Boy Smokie back to the races comes 4th

Postby geowarrior » Wed May 02, 2007 2:36 pm

Citi Smoke, who has had a mucus problem in his lungs followed by a case of pharyngitis, is racing on Friday 4th at Arlington Park in an AOC at 1 mile on the turf. He will be running for trainer Larry Rivelli for the first time.

He's been doing some gate training to try to get him to move out a bit faster, but his personality has been getting in the way. However, by all accounts he is a happy horse and has been training well. He's at 12-1 on the morning line.

Very cool, Tammy, I never thought of it. Thank you! I'll be sure to let you know next time, although I wasn't absolutely sure till a day or two ago that he was going to be entered. One thing I've discovered through this experience is that plans can change very quickly.

Haven't seen the replay yet because the Arlington Park site keeps crashing, however the chart is out and Smokie came 4th about two and a half lengths behind the winner. Apparently he was bumped at the start and was steadied, but was closing at the end. It was quite a good field in many ways, but the fractions were brutally slow which probably didn't help Smokie at all. There seemed to be a last minute jockey change also, and I'm not sure that helped either - Smokie isn't the most cooperative horse to ride.

Not bad for his first time back after his mucus/pharyngitis problems. I'm encouraged, but we'll see what the big bosses have to say and whether Smokie came out of it o.k.

Smokie is o.k. but behaved badly after he was seriously bumped at the start (I counted three separate bumps and I could see the bad temper emanating from him after the third one). It took him a while to settle down but then he made a very good move towards the end. The jockey was quite keen on him even though he is so awful to ride.

Ben if you want to see the video it was race 9 on May 4th at Arlington Park. The url is www.arlingtonpark.com and the screen and username/password are the same as for Fair Grounds. Smokie left from post position number 4, black silks and he is a gray horse. Watch for the bumping at the start.

He seems to be a horse that needs to be ridden from behind and hope he will closing at the end on the outside from the field.
