Any one ever wish your horse got claimed?

Postby imnumberjuan » Wed Aug 15, 2007 9:59 pm

I own a share of a filly running Friday in Hastings - and well you know ... if someone claimed her.. I would be all for it  (I have thought about inquiring with the jockey club about changing her name to money pit).

This is th esecond share of horse I have owned and my associates told me I don't know pain yet (ok, I am being hard on her, she has come out of the 9 hole twice on the bull ring, last race she set the fractions, and had it been 6 furlongs, or 6-1/4 furlongs and a head, woulda won...).

Its hard to argue with my one associate, the first horse he ever claimed, won like a thief and then died of a heartattack 50' past the wire... so not only was he out the claim but got a bill for disposal.

This kind of situation is what makes people not want to have partners. It's nice to be able to make your own decisions, but in exchange, you might not be able to afford as nice a pedigree. I dislike having partners, because I always act for the horse first, and not everyone is that way. But my two best horses have been partnership horses, because I could afford a little better class of horse that way.

I do believe in dropping them, though. You have to run them where they will win. But if you already in a bullring, you must be pretty far down? I wish you luck! Just please try to make sure that the horse lands in a soft spot if you decide to get rid of her. Pick up a September issue of The Horse and you'll see some heartbreaking pictures of a lot of unwanted horses....

Well she is running seconds now... (latest was by a nose... she woulda won by 5 lengths at 6 furlongs, if they could write races at Hastings 6-15/32 furlongs instead of those stupid 6-1/2 we woulda broke a condition... ...

The only problem is she is running bottoms and had a bad string of posts and luck, as well as questionable jockey moves (as my associated and I have noted, not too many jockeys have retired and begun a career at NASA).

I think the key is to bad mouth her as much as possible prior to each race ... that helps.

The key to success for us was to not bet any money on him AND finally get a good jockey.

We went from last to first  . Of course, I wish that at 29/1 I had had at least a little money on him!!!!

Bridled,

I looked at Classy's race Saturday and couldn't bring myself to bet my usual $20 win and place, though I bet my $1 4 horse box tri in the off chance 6 of the other nine scratched and hit it (only to find out I didn't check the race number, so instead of $600 the same combination had stumble home in the fourth race and I got $65 back  ).

Ah the joys of jockeys ... one got a mount on the filly cause the trainer wanted to reward him for a good ride on a mount at a B track the weekend before... he had 1 in his previous 72 starts at Hastings.. Why couldnt she put him on the stakes fillys and not ours? hehehhee

I re-read your post and remembered that I had done the very same thing before our horse's win. I gave my kids the option to come with me or stay home and play. They had already watched him lose terribly 4 times in a row. I said to my oldest "it's not like he's going to win". He said "now you're talking Mom". (Because before I had always been so positive  ) When he came from dead last and won, I was in complete shock. I sat there saying "no, he did not"......an elderly man behind me said "the 6 horse? yes he did".

Sounds like you're well on your way. Next time -- suck it up and bet nothing! Get a jockey who wants to improve his win percentage and you're in! We've played the "give this guy a chance" or "do this a guy a favor" routine. Never worked out.

Good luck!!

I hate the shoulda woulda couldas...

A mare I wish we had claimed (we had money in the account) a couple of years ago dropped in from $15 K to $5K (thumped our mare soundly) went in a 5 way shake, ran every 7 days back up the ladder and made $35K in a month in hastings (was claimed twice).

I haven't had one claimed off me yet (last chance this weekend for $8 000... third race hastings park ... she's sound... anyone... anyone... ).

One of two things happen here. You either came out of the partnership or you decided not to talk about the filly on this webiste. She has won the last 2 of 3 races at PM.

jainct,

I guess she is doing ok now... though prior to her stint in PM I had warned a partner I had found change in the sofa cushions and he would be recieving a bill of sale in the mail promptly...

Thank god they only run 6 furlongs there, 6-1/2 she woulda continued her placements out of the money.
