Only the Jockey Club has the ability to research tattoo numbers, however, there is a charge for that service. http://www.jockeyclub.com/

I'd imagine that if you contact them with the information you have, they can at least narrow it down for you - after all, there are only ten possibilities, they can't possibly all look alike!

Good luck. :)

Thanks Lucy, This is an older retired mare, I didn't really want to spend $600. more just to give her a name. I was hoping there was a site I could use like the Standard breds have to identify the tatoo. Thank you anyway. :? :?

The Jockey Club charge $35 to research a tattoo. No need to sound churlish.. there really is no free way to do that.

It is $35 to just get a name and a short pedigree with no performance results. If you have the letter and 4 digits, you have only 10 combinations possible, as you already know. Some of those 10 will be eliminated because of sex and color. So that narrows the list down to two or three, usually, and the lady at the JC desk is very nice and patient. You only pay when you get a match, so you can check all combinations for the $35.

Their policy is that they will do one search per phone call, so you may have to call back 10 times, but usually I catch her when she has no other calls, and she will run through them all for you at once if she can. It's easiest if you send in the request on-line:

The most difficult situation comes in when you are guessing between a bay and a dark bay, because the computer won't match if you guess wrong. Remember that a dark bay will not have a big color contrast between the legs and the coat. You will get an email confirming your request. If there is a match, you usually have the data in 3 or 4 hours. If there is no match, then they will send you an email suggesting how to look at the numbers again, and give you a phone number to call the tattoo desk direct. I always include information such as where I got the horse, because if there are three possible combos, one is a WA-bred, and I got the horse in WA, that helps narrow it down.

Unfortunately, you may find that you have misread one of the four numbers you believe you already have. Every tattooer has a different set, and 4s and 9s can be really tough.

Good luck! It's really fun to get their names-- I'd do it!

Thank you Majxmom, this is very helpful. I will pass this on . The harder it gets the more intriguing it is and the more it ropes us in. we have had several people read the tatoo and the letter an first four are quite clear and we all came up with the same figures so we will contact them and run the nine. I guess we can rule out geldings, but she is fleabitten grey now so may have been born bay, or chesnut I guess. She does have white markings so that should be a help. I will let you know if this pans out. thanks again

The markings won't help at all. The tattoo department has no access to them. Almost certainly this horse was declared a grey by registration time. You can usually see the roany hairs coming through by then.

The JC recommends taking several photos from different angles of the exposed lip. Then you can study them without having to hold the horse's lip up the whole time. They also recommend a black light, but I bought one and it hasn't helped at all.
