new horse-would love to find info on him, please help

I just bought a horse in Kentucky and his name is nick. he's a chestnut with no markings other than 3 white socks. He's about 16 hh and they said that he was a thoroughbred off the track and that he is 8 years old and they think his racing name was inthenickoftime.

I've been trying to find any info I can on him, with no luck. I don't know if the info they gave me is incorrect. I tried to read his tattoo and the letter and the last number are hard to read. I think it's C17155 although it could possibly be an E and the 5 may not be a 5 at the end. I don't have any papers on him.

could you please help me find any info on him. Is there a way I can find anything out before I pay to get his tattoo researched as I don't have the $ to do that yet. Thank you

Is this your guy?

Born in '01, though, if the dbase is correct, so he's only 6, not 8.

thank you. Is there a way I can tell if that's really him or if it's the wrong horse? It doesn't show any racing info on there, would that mean it just isn't on there, or did he not race? my horse's legs are pin fired, would that be a sign that he's raced, or would they do that to a horse and not race them? I wish that pedigree had more info so I could nail down that it is or isn't my horse. Or even find out where he raced at. I bought him in Kentucky so I'm guessing he was from one of the tracks around here like churchill.

does it say if that horse is a mare or gelding anywhere?

I called the jockey club and we tried a few variations of what I thought his tattoo looks like and none of them matched anything. So I don't have his tattoo to go by at all and I'm at least the 4th owner to have him since he raced just that I know of, so I don't even know if his name and age are right. This is so frustrating. It shouldn't be this difficult to get info on a young ottb.

The dbase says he's a colt, but it obviously wasn't updated with a race record or anything. Your best bet is to call the trainers (if you know them) who had him before you bought him.

Well, for starters.....that pedigree is in under the wrong name. The '01 colt by Yes Indeed x Money Happy is named 'Justinnickoftime'. According to the '04 APR he is a chestnut, and as of the end of that year was still unraced.

The most recent US-based horse named In The Nickoftime would be a ten-year-old dark bay.

Justthenickoftime sounds like your horse. He was in training for racing at some point. There are some trainers that pin fire just for the hell of it.. and some do it in the belief that it will prevent bucked shins. He got a lip tattoo in the normal course of training so he must have shown something. Lip tattoo is not free, not expensive mind you but not free. It is possible he just never got to start, through no fault of his own. Anyhow, if he is the '01 model his tattoo would start with the letter "E" -- good luck!

thanks! Well, we looked at him again last night in the dark with a red light (suggested by the lady at the jockey club) My husband thinks that the letter is a C and not an E. So that would make him a 99 and that coincides with the age we were told that he was.....but. I can't find any horse from 99 with any variation of inthenickoftime on the pedigree listing. grrr. this is so frustrating. He thinks that the last number is a 3 where I thought it was a 5 or maybe a 6 so I guess on Tuesday I'll call the Jockey club back and see if that matches anything. Just frustrating that It's a long weekend :? oh well.

I hope that my husband is right though so we can find out who this horse really is! Too bad there isn't anywhere I could type in Nick and every racehorse with nick in the name would show up. Now that would help narrow it down! (unless of course he happened to be named nick/ inthenickoftime AFTER he left the track

My last ottb I was never able to track down because his tattoo was unreadable and we were told his name was preppie and his last name was mr. peepers but couldn't match those to any racehorse that could be him either. (he was 16 when we bought him, so It's not as frustrating than with Nick since he's only 8.

Well, thanks for all of your help! Keep it coming if you think of anything I may not have thought of! :D I really appreciate it, Kerri

This one's a dark bay, per APR.

According to BRIS, this fellow was bred in Trinidad. I can find no sign of his having been imported & raced here.

I just called the jockey club back and the numbers that my husband thought were wrong! GRRR. This is so frustrating. She did say that there was a chestnut male horse with those #'s but with the letter B and not the letter C or E. I just have to look again because I really didn't think it could possibly be a B. maybe we got the last # wrong still.

There is a horse though named Nick of time that is from 1998 but he is listed as a dkb/b he is from golden eagle farm out of youthful lady and avenue of flags. I sure hope maybe that IS him because that horse is a Slew grandbaby and I LOVE seattle slew. (I was born in 77 the year he won the triple crown)

I doubt that's him though because I really don't think it looks like a B on his lip. although that is close to the age he supposedly is.

Does anyone know more about that horse Nick of time from 1998. Is he really dark bay or could he be chestnut? I called golden eagle farm but they didn't get back to me with any info on him.

Thanks for any help in narrowing this down/ruling out possibilities. I really appreciate it!

Definitely a dark bay, I'm afraid.

Man this post is nearly impossible to assist!

What we need is more actual, factual information from the original poster, without clouding it with all kinds of guesses that are so far off.

If ever she can come close, she would need only order winner's circle photos to establish whether the matching names have "three white socks".

The horse, "Nick of Time" (1998), last raced in Phoenix in April of 2005, and was dark bay or brown, and a whole "horse".

The tattoo number won't do us here a bit of good, but the first letter is of major importance:

S 1989
T 1990
U 1991
V 1992
W 1993
X 1994
Y 1995
Z 1996
A 1997
B 1998
C 1999
D 2000
E 2001
F 2002
G 2003

At the very least, the original poster can eliminate some of those letters, we hope.

Nowthen, after sorting through this difficult mish-mash of fact and fiction, I can at least report that there does exist a chestnut, 8yo gelding named: "Intheslickoftime".

That one spent its entire career in Minnesota and Oklahoma, winning twice, and last racing at Canterbury Park in August of 2004.

Breeders Art and Gretchen Eaton in MN.

Dates of wins, both at Canterbury

May 16, 2003

June 1, 2003 (order 2nd picture first, if there is any chance)

At any rate, you could find a number for the breeders, in MN perhaps, and call them to ask what happened to this horse.

I Googled "intheslickoftime" and found what is obviously part of the paper trail of your horse. Perhaps you should contact the last seller and at least find out where sheeeeeee purchased him. If you can trace the trail of ownership up north then there is hope of a match.

Important to note that this finding does NOT firmly connect the horse you purchased with the horse from Minnesota named "intheslickoftime". I am sure the registered name is so close that somebody down the line easily 'heard' (what they thought was) "In the Nick of Time".

Maybe this will help after all.

Breeder's contact info is at this link:

http://www.mtassoc.com/index.jsp?page=FARMS

Perhaps a simple e-mail with reference to the pictures posted online (seen after googling "intheslickoftime") will draw a "yay" or a "neigh" from them.

wow, thank you so much for that info on "intheslickoftime" That could be a very strong possibility.

I emailed the previous owner who said that 2 owners back the lady should have his papers but she lost track of her since she moved etc. over the 4 years and most likely won't be able to find her. (If she even tried to for me)

I can't make out the letter on his tattoo, they even tried checking if it was an * (lady at jockey club said * instead of a letter means the horse was born out of us)

I'm almost 100 certain that the last letter is a 5 and not a 3 and with that I couldn't find a match with any horse around his age. I was thinking maybe the letter could be a Z. we didn't check that at the jockey club. Not sure if the horse could be that old. He should be a C or a B.

If I ordered a win pick of Intheslickoftime to see if that looks like my horse where would I order it from, and around how much are they? and do they wrap their legs for races?

There's no where that I could look for pics other thatn that? Like at the track the horse raced at, or isn't there some sort of racehorse library at keeneland? I live in the Louisville, KY area.

Well, thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it guys!

I couldn't get the minnesota thoroughbred association page that you linked to come up :( Could you post the contact info or email it to me? L4gdurner at netzero dot com I don't know why the site would only come up with an error message.

The pics with the ad under google is my horse.

Is there anywhere else that I could find out what intheslickoftime's markings are or what his registration # is to see if it matches the tattoo #'s that I can read on Nick?

Thanks again for your help, it would be great if this is him.
