To keep as a stallion or Geld him

Postby Squishy » Fri Jun 15, 2007 7:04 am

HI,
First I am new to this forum. but have been reading it for the pass year. My question is I have a tb stallion. He is very well behaved and I'm retraining him for jumping and dressage. I just want to know if you all think he would be good to keep as a stallion to see what he produces for the track. Don't really know about the sport horse stuff as he hasn't gone to his first show yet but thought maybe with his bloodlines he would be a better canidate as a racing stallion.

My horses name is Skip the Melody. He is about 17 hands. He has very nice conformation. I can see if I can post pics on here sometime. But what do you guys think as for his pedigree.

thank you

Unless you think he's going to develop into a Gran Prix level horse and will appeal to the H/J crowd, geld him now. There's nothing exciting about a son of Skip Away and nothing in his family to suggest he'll make a racing sire.

The size and bone that Skip can pass along, could very well appeal to the sporthorse breeders, but so far Skip is a breed to race sire and I think for one of his sons to stand as a racing stud, they'd have to do more on the track than your boy has done.

If you have the facilities to keep a stallion and he is well behaved, you can always show him and see if he earns the right to breed in the sporthorse world and if not, he can be gelded later.

Would love to see pictures! And best of luck with him

ok I am going to attempt to attach pictures. Theses are pics of last Sept. When he just got off the track. I haven't taken any this year yet was hoping to have them professionally done at the horse show. But he has alot more mass to him now. Its funny because I'm in quarter horse country but I show in Florida and he would stand in ocala if I were to stud him out. but the georgia people all thought he was the biggest quarter horse they ever seen for around here. And the people in Florida thought he had some warmblood in him. I will try to get more recent pics of him to post. But at least you can have a look at him.

He is very well behaved which people that don't work around alot of stallions are shocked that there are kind stallions out there. HE can go out with other horses, can be stabled next to mares, which is probably because of the track. He very laid back and listens when he is in hand. He does everything you aks of him and seems to love to jump hasn't refused anything but we haven't jumped really to high yet. I mostly have been training him for dressage and hope to take him to a show in the next few months when it cools down a little here. Well anyway tell me what you think.

I would leave him intact till you see what he can do, no real reason to geld him if he is well behaved, many europeans do even if the horse is never bred.
