My 26 year old mare suprised me with a beautiful filly
I have a 26 year old mare who has been living out with my stallion for the past 4 years as his companion. I assumed that she would never have another foal after I tried to breed her the first two years and she did not carry. She would get in foal but would not carry due to the amount of cysts in her uterus.
About 5 weeks before she foaled, I thought I saw something move in her belly. Although she did not look big enough to be pregnant, I had the vet check her and he said sure enough, she was in foal and he thought she would deliver in about 6 weeks. Well, 5 weeks and 3 days later, she had a beautiful bay filly with a star, two white hind socks, and white on both front heels! She was a little week and took a couple of days to start bouncing around, but she is now 2 weeks old and seems to be doing wonderful. I just can't believe this mare could carry to term at her age.
I am so suprised I just wanted to share with everyone!

That's wonderful news! Congratulations. I, too, have a "mature" mare who is newly in foal....she is 24 and due next April when she turns 25. She is remarkably youthful and well-preserved, however, and you'd never guess by looking that she's her age. I am greatly encouraged by your post!

Yes springboro, the mare is Avant Tout. I really don't know much about her pedigree, if you know of anything else interesting, I would love to find out about it. The filly is by Just a Devil.
Jenny, it is about time to start painting the fence again now! It really is a job no one wants to do!
Wouldn't it be something if this filly could be a great runner. I guess anything is possible. We will have to wait a couple of years to see!
Bondama, good luck with your older mare. If Avant could do it, I know your mare can. The last time we tried to get her to carry, the vet told me there was about a 1% chance that she would carry to term. Now that she has foaled successfully, I did ask him that if she continues to live out with the stallion, What are the chances that she will foal at age 27? He just laughed and said "probably less than the chances that she would foal at age 26".
Now I have to come up with a name for the little one. I would love to name her something like Against the Odds. I will have to play with it to find a version that is not taken.

you can see what her catalog page looks like as one of her daughter's foals was sold recently.

In a nutshell, Avant Tout is a winning producer who is a 1/2 sister to stakes winner CELESTIN (in Norway) out of a stakes-placed 1/2 sister to English 3-year-old champion IN COMMAND II and several other stakes horses.
her sire, Balboa, was champion older horse in Austria.
Interesting... she was foaled in GB... did you import her or how did you happen upon her?

This explains a lot!! She was bred by Foxhill Stud.
