Congrats on the mare & foal doing much better from what your earlier update said! I should check this forum more often. Hope the rest of the year and past then runs smoothly for you.

Placentitis, enteritis, money w/wings...

Postby TB Dreamin' » Fri May 25, 2007 6:54 am

:D Hi foal watchers, friends, supporters!

I am happy to report that we were able to bring the Momma and the big (now skinny, but large) colt home after 5 days in the hospital. He's one of those huge colts that you're so excited about, and then realize that his legs had to be folded in a small space for so long that as the days progress (especially in the hospital without exercise) you stop wanting to look at those 'windy' legs...but it has been a week today since I've had him home and every day he seems a little stronger and the hind legs, a little straighter.

He's funny tho, never seems full. Nurses and nurses and nurses...maybe because he had to wear the muzzle for 3 days? And, he voraciously drinks his Mother's water and eats her feed, if given the chance. Our vet said not to worry about the water, but we've had to put the feed out of his way. He'll devour bran mash, sweet feed, anything. Seems like he's always hungry. But, I guess hungry all the time is better than the alternative? Right?

Well, I'm originally from Minnesota, and they say, we leave long-winded messages that'll use the whole tape on an answering machine, so hear I go again...

Just wanted to update everyone on our progress.

All the Best,
Amy

YAY!!! So glad this is turning into a happy story. Like most of the breeders here, I've had my share of unhappy endings.

He sounds like a whopper. Will we get to see pics?

Amy - so glad they are both home and doing well! Now you can experience the joys of having a baby at home to look after (and not spoil too much - yeh right!) Having him want to eat everything in site is a good thing I'm sure  You will have to send us pictures and don't worry if he has been shaved, etc... for his IV's - we all understand that! We just want pictures of him and his momma  I am thrilled that things have turned out so well for you! This is a hard business to get into and when things go wrong they can go terribly wrong quickly (or a slow bleed) but when they go right - it is SO GREAT! Enjoy seeing him test his legs and test mom even more!

Next up - fly mask :)

We've battled that one here already :D

Dear Amy,
I went through the MRLS with a barn full a few years ago. Pretty much every foal was on meds about 6 times a day, IVs', nostril tubes, If it wasn't going in one end, it was going in another. We all have been there (with human or horse or something). It's all worth it the first time mom and baby are out galloping side by side. Make sure you have a camera to capture all the happy moments. because again (human or hrsey). They grow up too darn fast!

Best Wishes,
Crystal

Update on baby colt...

Postby TB Dreamin' » Thu May 31, 2007 12:19 pm

Hi all, thanks for all the well wishes and checks to see how we're doing. We had a small (big for me, as I could not take too much more!! ) set-back w/a bout of diarrhea, which at first I dismissed as foal heat related. The 2nd day the "d" turned watery/stinky and I freaked. Our vet put him on pepto and Pro-bios and it seemed to be better, so we stopped after about 4 days and then... :? it started up again, I'm talkin' colored water, yesterday, so now we're on pepto, bio-sponge, both 3 times a day, and Pro-biotics, once per day.

The awesome news is that he's not sick, no fever, and he's starting to run around Mom, squealing at the top of his lungs, w/his legs going lickety-split, in all directions.

Mom is cleared for her appt. w/her next suitor on Sunday a.m. (we avoided the foal heat, because I don't think it's fair and to give Mr. Man more time to get strong and not be stressed w/o Mom when he was so sick)

So, we laughed when we read "Congrats on getting home, now you can worry about all the other stuff...SO true" and felt blessed when we heard about the barn after MRLS, w/MULTIPLE foals getting meds 6 times a day!!!!  I would've been a basket case...and love to hear from all of you.

I promise pictures as soon as I get out my directions to Photobucket, which I printed and saved, promptly after someone (forgive me, I can't remember who) was kind enough to write them out for everyone. Just bear with the shaved neck from IV's and thin appearance of my man.

Warmest Regards,

Amy
