Pedigree Query

I am about to wean a 3 month old colt, out of necessity, and for his mother's well being. He's a gigantic boy, and in the last month has literally "pulled her down" probably 150 pounds or so. She's 23 and I feed her senior feed, oats, calf manna and corn oil with each feeding (2x daily) and soaked beet pulp once a day. She has free choice access to hay 24/7. In spite of all this, she is still too thin. Wormings are up to date. The vet says it's common in elderly mares and the foals put the biggest drain on any mare's resources at this age. He has recommended early weaning of her foal as a result. My question to you is whether he will need milk replacer at this age, or if the junior grain & supplements he now gets will suffice alone? Can anyone shed some light on this?

From everything I've read if they are eating grain and grass they are good to go However, at 3 months old what does your vet say? Although I've heard folks wean at that age with no problems.

When I have to wean early, I use Buckeye foal pellets mixed in with the grain. I think they need the extra calcium.
