Foal Growth Chart

Postby tammysinnett » Wed Jul 25, 2007 1:06 pm

Wish they had them 8) They have them for babies why not baby equines?? I would really like to see how are babies are doing compared to others (first years of foal raising) MY one mare owner keeps asking if his colt is big like his mamma??? Compared to the others he is tall but he was born first....I dont want to mislead them...and actually I would like to know. Anyone got any leads on this subject or does it really mean anything to the raising of foals in the Racing Industry? Just a topic for discussion...feel free to brag on heights weights and ages of your large foals

I need to get out and measure my filly. They are still at the stallion owners barn, and I don't get out there near enough.

To me she is HUGE, but then again, I raise Welsh ponies, so huge is relative

I'm a bit of a freak - I keep a large notebook in my barn with sections for each mare and foal. I have forms for daily documentation (to note anything of significance), a vacination form that includes farrier dates, deworming, etc..., a breeding form, a measurement form, etc... So at a glance I can see what is going on with any of my mares/foals. Or if anyone comes in to the barn to take care of the mares/foals they know what is going on with them  Makes my life easier. For instance, if special notes are made by the farrier that he wants to remember to trim shorter on the inside - that is written down so when he comes back we both remember. We measure, etc... the foals every month or so to chart their growth. More often now that they've been weaned.

Thanks Bondama....dont know why I never could find a link until you found it for me.....mmm hope that isnt a reflection of my computer knowledge  Clh what a wonderful idea....next birthing season I think I will try that....take some confusion out of things. Well I did measure my foals....I ended up with one bite to the forearm one bruise to the leg...(all injuries on my body) but I got them...the foals were laughing and running and oh my god I am wore out. One of our mares got loose while I was involved with my project...the one that isnt bred and decided to go make out with our stallion thank god for tall fences. Oh boy so here they are..my colt of 4months looks to be around460lbs if I measured correctly...our filly of 3 months about 4o6 and our yearling filly is at 1050. So at least according to the chart they are right on schedule. Our colt just looks so tall long legged and not thick but muscular...when I look at other colts about his age He just seems the lanky basketball player type not the football lineman type. His mother aprox 1263lbs she can make you feel small. I guess again its the waiting game.... so come on everyone get out there measure foals lets see what is out there ....its so much fun you will have a blast

Your yearling filly is 1050 lbs?
Is she a monster??? That seems really big. My show hunter is 1200 lbs and he's F-A-T (he hears P-H-A-T.....close enough!).

LOL! There is a tape you use that gives you weight based on measurement. Knowing their weight helps with knowing how much grain, supplements (if you use them) dewormer, etc.... to use instead of standing back and saying "I guess they weigh 350 lbs." - :D

I need to measure and "weigh" my kids again!

Tammy - if you are interested I can send you copies of the forms I use so you don't have to start from scratch. If you are interested just let me know ;)

Yes I would love your set up if you wouldnt mind. You can either email them or snail mail them just pm me I will give you an address. As for our yearling she is almost 15 months, so she is over a year. She has the biggest Booty- has since she was a child. She also is the one that has been jumping my fences on the farm....several vet bills later we are finally getting those cut up legs healed. She would have made a beautiful HJ she is so dark bay with two back white feet.
This is how I got her est body weight correct me if wrong....g(69")xg(69")xL(63") / 300 then add 50=wt 69x69=4761 x 63 =299943 / 300 =999.87 +50=1049.87 now I did look her up at a chart that was given by girth measurement and she was around a 1000. Of course these are estimated.
She really doesnt look fat, still can see a rib when she is active ,she eats like the world is ending. Yes she has been wormed ....she is of Storm Cat bloodline and seems to be my hyper kid. When I watched the movie Ruffian when they saw the yearling come out of the trailor the words of excitement are hopefully the same words they will say when our first baby goes to the trainer....I need a Emoticon for hopeful begging or dreaming here :D

I got to looking and there was noway my filly was 1050!! just no way. So I remeasured her and my mistake was in the height...I didnt have my glasses on and wow was I shocked when I remeasured she is only59 inches tall not 69!!! so that makes her weight closer to 760lbs whew thanks for making me rethink. I was thinking we were going to have to put her on a diet and all she wants to do is eat anyhow!!!
