A few VERY sunfaded pictures of my 5.5 month old filly

Kiss Me Im Clever by Clever Return and out of Kiss My Asterisk

The palomino in some of the pictures is 1.5 YEARS old.

This Texas sun is heck on a horses coat! She is black under there!

She's purty - looks like a buckskin though!!! That's okay, the Florida sun plays hell on my palominos, too. They're a very deep gold, with dapples, but are so bleached on top and sides, they look almost white.

Colors do change with the amount of sunshine. Vivid Dreams was black/purple as a yearling at Keeneland, but most of the time is a sun-bleached irregular brown color. She's eight now, and I haven't seen the purple since she was a yearling.

PURPLE? I don't believe I've ever seen a purple horse! Now, that's a horse of a differnt color! (Sorry, couldn't resist the bad Wizard of Oz reference! :oops:

Regarding color, ours are all outside in the sun all the time, but I've noticed over the past few weeks that all of our "regular bays" have turned into "dark bays" and all of our "dark bays" have turned blackish... many even have what appears to be a reddish/copper/chestut type tint to the tips of their manes and tails, too. It's very pretty, but I have no idea why they're all darkening up like that... seems it should be the opposite, being in the sun all the time. Any ideas? (OK, the lighter bays aren't changing, just the regular and dark bays.)

Oh, and lazyfranch, I'm glad you posted those baby pictures. I remember those baby pictures and until you posted them for comparison, I had no idea it was the same horse! :lol:

Roguelet, the days have become shorter now for three months, so the sun-bleached hair is growing out and shedding, leaving the less-bleached hair to replace it. Thus the darkening coat. When the winter coats come in, the visible woolly coat will again appear different in color due to the texture change.

Well, now that makes sense, except I don't remember seeing this in years past... maybe I just haven't been paying attention! :lol:

Although, come to think of it, the 3 horses that made me really start to notice this weren't here at this time last year... interesting...
