Vivid Dreams' foal dies

Postby henthorn » Mon Feb 25, 2008 4:12 pm

We'd been waiting almost a year to see our new Sky Classic foal out of Vivid Dreams (March 3rd cover).
Yesterday at 4am an apparently healthy strapping colt arrived without trouble. However, though he tried to nurse, he became increasingly bloated and could not pass any stool despite enemas and no apparent birth defects. He died within eight hours of birth, and the vet said nothing could have saved him. He apparently just wasn't designed for life outside his mother. Poor Vivid; she's missing her baby. She has two healthy daughters, and her 2005 son died from trauma at 33 days of age. Her 2yo Millennium Wind filly is in race training now, and the mare has already been sold, arranged in advance of foaling.

I sure hope her new owner has better luck with her than I did. We have only two of racing age out of six years trying. :(

I am so sorry to hear that, what a shame. what was really the matter with him? Was his bowels not formed properly or something along those lines? I am always paranoid about them pooping. It is like I am on constant poop watch. I know someone who had a colt die from a ruptured bowel, which scared me. Again very sorry for your loss.

I'm really sorry and truly hate that the little guy didn't make it. I hope that your MW filly does fantastic at the track. Again, so sorry. Take care.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. We lost a foal this year too, so I share your sorrow. It's hard to plan and hope for a year and then lose it all in the end. This is just a tough, tough business.

Jenny, no autopsy was done. But though he appeared normal on the outside, his digestive tract obviously didn't connect all the way through. I'm surprised he even lived long enough to be born. Only when he was forced to use his digestive system did the problem show itself.

A friend of mine said the exact same scenario was enacted with one of her herd's foals last year. Sky Classic has been at stud for many years, and has no propensity for defective babies. I notified Pin Oak's stallion director already. :?

So sorry for the loss of the baby. I know what you're feeling, and extend my thoughts and prayers that you and the mare can be comforted. Hugs!
