My foaling theory

After 3 sleepless nights and still no babies from either mare , I have decided its all a plot against me

I think the other horses in the barn enjoy getting thrown a flake of hay every hour or two and having their water constantly topped off, so they have paid off the mares to NOT foal.
The first mare was due on the 20th, has been dripping milk steadily since Sunday night and of course since I cant wait to see the Indy King baby, she is keeping me wide awake and foalless. And the other mare infoal to Roar of the Tiger was due the 21st and is HUGE and ready but I think she is waiting for mare #1...its not fair the horses are getting fat, the owner gets to sleep in a warm bed and I am exhausted ..it is definitely a conspiracy

Gerry, if you sneak away to catch just three hours sleep, they will most likely both foal. Waiting for privacy...

That's guaranteed. I checked a wily old mare once at 3:30am because I thought she looked a little restless on the monitor. In the barn, she seemed perfectly normal. Not even so much as a light sweat. By the time I made the five minute walk back to the house where the monitor was set up, she'd foaled. I swear she was sniggering up at the camera.

I agree that they will wait until I give up but I think the mares are part of the feed more hay conspiracy in my barn. They take turns acting restless, dripping slightly, laying down ect....next month I will just plain sleep in the barn with all the mares that I have due.

Totally invest in Foal Alerts.. God they're great. It calls you on the phone when a mare has poped the strip. We have a dedicated line for the foal alert.. some how 411 listed that number as our secondary number.. Long story short, the woman in CS from tanconic phone was nearly on the floor laughing when I explanded the whole foal alert thing.

Does anyone know if Gerry is still of this earth? Or is she frozen to a stock tank some place? Should we call 911?

I know she is pretty tired and I am really curious if those mares foaled yet

I know by the time my mare foaled I wasn't sure if I was alive or dead, I bet Gerry feels the same way. My mare foaled two days early so I really shouldn't have anything to complain about except she didn't read the chemetrics manual apparently and messed everything up. Her milk tested in the "do not leave unattended, 98% of mares will foal within 12 hours" for SIX days! Why am I not surprised my ONE mare was in that 2%? Its kind of like a reverse lottery ticket....

No need to worry about me...I am still here, sleep deprived and NO babies yet. Breeding season is keeping me busy during daylight and the mares have basically decided they dont want to foal yet...fine with me...but now you can add #3 to the waiting list.

Why do I always get the mares that foal really late? Last year I had one due 1/28 who foaled 3/1!!! as long as they are healthy they can take as long as they want

I assume you are either too tired from all the foalings to update this thread, or someone secretly gelded all your studs and you have been up nights watching your really fat mares Gerry!

Hi Laurie!
No, thank goodness my stallions still have all their parts. Its been crazy busy here. So far all my clients mares have foaled fillies and I have 9 mares due before the end of the month...finally 4 of them are mine. I am very excited, one is by Dunsinyne and I cannot wait to see what he produces.
Happy Easter everyone!
