Another Mare aborted

What is going on? Our last mare, Houston Bound, aborted just overnight. She was just vacinated and wormed at the beginning of this month and has been fine. This mare has never been on regumate and has always been an easy mare. She is current on everything and has been on schedule. NO new babies for us in 09. What a tough blow.

I am so sorry for your losses. That is terrible to lose your entire crop like that.

Just wondering if you have sent off samples of either fetus or placenta? It might be a good idea to figure out why they are aborting before next breeding season.

With both mares aborting at this stage and within a few days of each other I would suspect:

Rhino
EVA
or
Fescue Toxicosis or other feed related problem. Johnson grass can be toxic in quantity also.

There ARE other causes - placentitis, etc., but since it is your "entire" herd it is like an abortion storm and it is more likely that ONE factor caused both mares to abort.

:( I am so sorry to hear about this. :(
It must be quite devastating for you.
I agree with Madelyn it could be something along those lines or just plain bad luck. I would most definitely look into it before next breeding season. Again sorry for these unfortunate circumstances.

The first mare aborted in August and Houston Bound just the other day. Could Rhino cause it if they were both vaccinated for it?

Oh, NO! That's terrible! Between you and joeangelo it's horribly depressing in this forum. At least his mare was OK; I hope Houston is OK as well.

I am very sorry to hear that. I have a mare that has aborted twice (both times at the 9 1/2 - 10 month). We put her on regumate the next time.
