Helen O is finally big and waxing.... so we're expecting a foal any day now. Due date was 4/25 so we're not too concerned. Fingers crossed for a weekend baby!

Yeah, I'll predict a weekend baby. We have high winds and rain, possibly snow tomorrow... how could a mare POSSIBLY resist foaling in such lovely weather?

The weekend is nearly over and all I can say is that I have one very crabby and big mare. Of course, in real life she's usually crabby - no big change there.

Instead I watched a video (VHS!) of a foaling in 1998 to remind me of the process. Memo to self... if you're going to be in something like this, consider the consequences of running to the barn in your nightshirt and watch what you say! egads, I sound like a big fool crooning to that baby and mama!

It sounds like you had the same crummy weather that we did!

I have a fat crabby mare as well, but she isnt due til April 11th and no wax at all yet, so I think I am still looking at the Easter Bunny bringing this one to me!

LOL, been there, done that.

Honestly, it's so funny to watch yourself on video around animals. I had no idea I talked as much as I do to them. Silly things, touching and scratching and cooing.

And of course, I couldn't leave the poor foal alone. I kept making him get up and nurse, when the video clearly shows that he had nursed right before I got there and then laid down for a nap.

We are in the same boat. My mare was due on the 21st and is still holding out. She has been really crabby, cant wait until this is over with.

My mare was due the 22nd and finally foaled yesterday morning. For some reason, many mares seem to be going late this year.

Um.. during this season, I wear a clean sweatsuit to bed, with long underwear underneath. With socks. The better to stuff my feet into my rubber boots and slouch into a warm jacket for that RUN TO THE BARN. Don't need as many blankets that way....

My first mare foaled Sun night at 9:30 pm which I thought was downright civilized. Not only could I wake up grumpy hubby to help and muck as he would not be too zonked, but I had also the assistance of two small children who keep you to task, name the foal before it is clear, and are wound up for hours after. It is a lovely Van Nistelrooy filly who looks quite like him. To top if off, the prissy maiden mare with a minor princess complex fell madly in love with her baby, and has been a stellar mom ever since.

I also stay fairly dressed for those sprints to the barn. I could see the sack protruding from the camera so wouldn't have had much time to haul on many clothes. I now have one "okay" barn coat, one "disgusting" barn coat, and one "truly revolting covered in poo, blood, and other mare substances" barn coat. Note to self: toss latter in spring, move others up.
