Edema Swelling

Postby karenkarenn » Sat Mar 28, 2009 12:50 pm

Hello,
I was hoping the I posed this question in the right Topic.
My mare Deaconess last breeding date was May 27 08'
Im guessing she is due the end of April early May.
With that so far away, she has the edema in her teets and between her legs, is this too soon. She s also taking to hiding, while shes out in the pasture. She hides under the shelter.

Are you sure it is edema and not a bag? If she bags up too early, it could be an indication of placentitis. While easily curable with antibiotics, it can cause her to abort her foal if not dealt with. You might want to get a vet out to check her. On the other hand, some mares bag up a month or so prior to foaling and this could be normal. I think I would err on the side of caution and get her checked. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
