We Lost Our Filly :( (Devon Lane x Glorieta4)

Postby ZiaLand » Tue Apr 11, 2006 9:32 pm

I'm almost afraid to announce this, because of what happened with our last one, but...

We had a bay filly with a star born yesterday by Devon Lane out of Glorieta(4).

Linebred Secretariat, Northern Dancer, et al.

It wasn't an easy birth, and about a week early, but so far so good.

Now....just holding my breath...

I'm happy to report the filly is still alive and well, and she and Mom are both doing fine, so far.

Almost to the one week mark now. :D

That's great news, Laurie! Losing one sure makes you gun-shy, doesn't it? But it also makes each moment with them memorable. :?

Henthorn, thanks for your thoughts.

Yes, it sure makes you tend to think worst case scenario. I was really worried about this one because the mare just didn't seem to be getting any bigger between when she left the ranch a month ago and when we saw her not long before the foal was born. But she's a big, stout mare, so I guess she just carries well.

Well, it did turn out to be worst case scenario, after all.

We lost the filly Monday. Necropsy is in progress.

Pretty devastating year for us.

I am sorry that you lost the filly. It was sounding good for awhile there, which makes it even harder. This is sometimes a tough business, but don't give up. Hope you can get a breed back under those difficult circumstances.

Oh, Laurie, I am SO SORRY to hear this... I lost one so far this year (touch wood) and have 8 more to come.

Mare #4 is in the barn right now. It is such a HEARTBREAK after all that waiting.

So sorry, Laurie. These things weren't expected when we got into this business, were they? Just cute, cuddly babies playing in the fields, and racing futures for each of them. Mortality in the first few weeks is so common. :( :?

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. It really helps to know we're not alone in this. We figured the odds were stacked against us with two of the three being maiden mares, but didn't expect to lose two.

There's an offer on the table of a free breed back to Lazy Lode. If it happens, we'll certainly be extremely grateful because the foal was a live foal (5 days old) and they met the terms of the contract.

We haven't talked to the farm that stands Devon Lane yet, so don't know what they'll say. I'll not really expecting that they'll also offer a free breed back, but you never know.

Thanks again,
Laurie

So sorry. We lost one last year. I'm a bit worried about the mare that lost her foal last year. Today is her due date. She does not look very big and has zero bag. Seems like she should bigger and baggier! Hope the rest of everyones foalings go better!
We have one TB mare that turned up preggo that errrr was not bred. At least not on purpose. At the end of last summer my 3 YO filly learned how to open pasture gates and let the mares out/they of course headed for the stallion's paddock. I ran out at midinght in my PJs when I woke up to crashing sounds and his gate was 1/2 off it's hinges. I thought we got everyone before he got out/did anything but I guess not  . I called the JC office to ask how to report and "extra" for last year that got missed on the breeding report. She asked how that occurred and I said "well his trainer terms it an OFF offense: Over Fence Fornication". She really laughed and said that was hysterical and added some humor to her morning! So..........that bugger would be due about late June :P
As Mr. Studly's trainer also said: Hey! The JC can be happy. At least it was live cover :!:
