Why mares are so late this year? Did the axis shift and the daylight lessen?

I have two in the barn, due Apr 16th and 23rd... maybe today?

I had one due Jan 25th foaled Feb 28th, a March 11th foaled April 2nd.. a March 29th foaled April 11th..

The only one so far this year even close was Miss Punctuality, born RIGHT ON TIME on Jan 6th.

Every year there will be a bell-shaped curve of gestational periods, that changes all the time, just like the weather, plants, insects, viruses, etc. The largest percentages will bear foals near the median, which would be near the due date, and fewer at distant dates. But the median on the curve may shift up and down from year to year, and from month to month, so that there may be more early or more late ones than expected in your broodmare band.

All of ours were late too. Every single one of them.

What about cycles? This has been a nutty season for that as well. Seems nobody is cycling like they should be... I thought I was crazy, but as I've talked to other people, it seems to be a pattern this year.

Two of mine delivered within a day of expected, and one was eight days early. The stillborn one delivered 3 1/2 weeks early.

I suspect it depends on the weather in your area, amount of sunlight, type of nutrition, etc.

Madelyn,

I have been thinking the exact same thing....with the exception of the mare due 3/3 who foaled 3/2 everyone is running about 16 days late here. Leecoo who was due on 4/15 finally foaled at 12:17 am 5/3 ( a nice healthy Not A Corgi filly and I am thrilled since momma is 25yr old and this is her last one! ) but my 4/24, 4/26 and 4/28 mares arent looking even close yet...so much for having April foals.

Roguelet, we are also experiencing mares not cycling. I have one clients mare here who he wanted bred early since she is a small mare and he sells commercially but even given Lutalyse she isnt cycling to breed....with the Lutalyse she comes in heat but doesnt make a breedable folicle...only thing vet can figure is that she starting cycling in january when it was so warm and then shut down when it got winterlike in February and now she is just starting to come around again. Our breeding shed has been going full force for the last 2 weeks but we will not be expecting any foals before Mid-march at best next year....mother nature wins again :-)

Henthorn...I think its the weather....its been plenty sunny (unfortunately we need the rain) and nutrition isnt an issue here.
