Just when you have a nice high going, you get SMACKED down

Our beautiful and gentle mare, Overnight Deposit, is in the hospital.

She worked her best effort but her filly was a dystocia (bad presentation) and was nearly a fetotomy.

All looked okay, but the head/neck were twisted and back and it took the best in the business to get the filly out. She was at the point of hemmorhage and she had not delivered a placenta as of a few hours ago.

All prayers are welcome.

So sorry, Madelyn, for the problems with the foaling. It's hard enough to lose the expected foal, but to worry about losing the mother is too much! Your mare is in my prayers tonight. Sharon

God... it just should NOT be this hard.

Your story brings back the sadness we had last year when we lost one of our beautiful broodmares in a uterine tear under simlar circumstances.

And just last week we had another -- upside down presentation and leg and neck twisted back. Fortunately, this time the vet was able to save both mare and foal, although he said it was the hardest foaling he'd ever done.

That mare and foal have amazed everyone by bouncing back and being 100% fine as of today.

You know my prayers are with you, wishing for a good outcome for your mare as well.

sorry from us at Wishersprings

This is our first year at foaling in Illinois, reading your board has really touched my heart for how hard this all is. I pray for your mare ...and I am so sorry for your loss of foal....We loss a set of undetected twins, and I sat on the hill with my husband with the mare and cried..then we barried them with our beloved dog and named the twins Sums Heart and Soul....I never knew how I would let our first foal from our stallion leave our farm, I guess now I don't..one was a filly and one was a colt.

Overnight Deposit is coming home today. I will get her this afternoon. I am going to learn how to flush a uterus tomorrow. She will be on 3 weeks of relatively intensive care in my barn because I simply can't afford to pay $200 a week plus meds for the vet hospital. She's out of danger, but there is a very gray area regarding ever breeding her again. Fortunately she is a good gentle mare with beautiful conformation and I will probably be able to put some training on her and sell her as a riding/companion horse.

I am SO glad to hear that she's holding her own and coming home, so you can heal together...... body and soul.

Still wishing you the best possible outcome.

Madelyn,

So sorry to hear of your mare and foal. I hope Overnight Deposit continues to improve and do well.

I agree with Karie that this year has been unusually hard on the forum members in terms of losses of mares, foals and both.

Hopefully better years are ahead.

Laurie
