First off, there is NOTHING wrong with wanting a certain thing in a horse, be it a certain color, a certain bloodline, or a certain wonky blaze. In this situation tho, you might want to look down the road for that horse as a 2nd or 3rd horse when your niece is a more advanced rider. Any youngster's first horse should be bomb proof for sure. There are hundreds of thousands of horses out there for sale - with due diligence and an advisor YOU CAN TRUST you should have no problem finding an excellent partner for your niece.

Have you considered taking some riding lessons yourself? Even if you used to ride at a very competent level, when getting back in the saddle after a long time away the muscles need to be re-developed to gain a secure seat. Taking lessons allows you to get "back in the saddle" safely and happily, working on your muscle strength and position instead of worrying about your safety on a fresh off the track TB. Even if you were a whiz of a rider 20 years ago, getting on a "green" TB after years out of the tack is liable to be a little scary here and there. Its just a thought, but perhaps you could take lessons and in a few months get your own horse to accompany your niece. Then you could look for you OWN Gato descendant. :)
