Hi, I'm new to the list. I'm a proud member of the Kristin Ann "syndicate". It's almost time for her to head for Florida and we're really excited! Although, after the heat and humidity hit her, Kristin Ann may want to jump back on the trailer heading back to Virginia<g>. Have been doing lots of shopping for her. That's been fun, since I haven't owned a horse in over 20 years. I'm really looking forward to pampering her and treating her like the daughter of racing royalty that she is.
I hope to hear more about her pasturemates, like Cute Show, as time goes on. Kathy P.

Kathy - Welcome to the forum. I am so excited that the Kristin Ann syndicate will be getting her home this week. I am also very jealous, because my "Cutie" will not be to my new home in Kentucky until the first of next year. I am going to be like you, pampering her, and lavishing her in her well deserved retirement. I will have her Quillan's leather halter waiting for her, with her brass plate saying - Cute Show Secretariat x Show Stopper. Give her a hug! Leslie

Kristin Ann is HOME! She's still in pretty sorry shape. I'll be documenting her progress here: http://s173.photobucket.com/albums/w76/ ... tin%20Ann/
That's kathy holding and her family in the background. She had the first of many baths today to try and get rid of the rain rot.

wow
wow Ididnt realize the horse would look that way.....you are so wonderful to take her in ....now you have me feeling guilty I feel I should try to do something for these babies what can I do????
She looks a lot like my old mare Taffy did when I got her at the end of 1990. Taffy did not stop eating for 2 days and nights. She ate grass day and night + 14% protein horse feed. It took about 2 months to get her looking good. Every time I brushed her more hair came out with gray at the roots and she had bald spots with gray skin. Taffy was skin and bone also. She is 33 years old now. I hope your poor mare will do as well as Taffy did back when. I have seen picture of horses rescued from people charged with cruelty to animals that looked better than that.
It still breaks my heart when I look at Kristin. She's one tough girl! Thanks to Stephanie and her family for working so hard to rescue her! Kristin is quite a character. I've never seen a horse adjust so quickly to a strange place. As long as she gets her food, she's happy<g>. It only took a day of giving her treats for her to prick her ears and walk over to you as soon as she sees you. She loves treats! I think helping to rehab her will be one of the most rewarding things I've ever done.

The best way to help the other horses is to try and find buyers for them!
Lots of good prospects there for pleasure or sport esp those youngsters! No race injuries, ready to train! And the broodmares look like they'd produce nice sport babies too, esp. Blazing Jewel, look at her lovely conformation!
Please note that Kristin Ann's condition is not necessarily a reflection of the other horses conditions! the only ones I've seen are the ones who have pictures on their pedigrees and they look well enough. I suspect Kristin's main problem was bad teeth and worms. Her rain rot probably is a combination of sensitive skin and a back shaped like a bowl combined with a table!
At her age she was just not able to overcome challenges the way a younger horse might. From her attitude towards the other horses here I also suspect she may have been the bottom of the totem pole and had to waste energy fighting for her food. She totally ignores the others, wants nothing to do with them! She loves people though and is already building a fan club in the neighborhood!
PLEASE don't call or email Steph with hate mail, she's not the one who put the horses in this shape and if not for her help Kristin would probably be dead in a pasture now. She's going out of her way to help rehome these horses! What the horses need are people to step up and help them by taking on a project or retiring a broodmare.
Don't kill the messenger!

Why thank you! We will keep everyone posted on her progress. We've gotten most of the crud from the rain rot off, still have a few places to go. nasty oily stuff! But the skin under it is in good condition, no sores, just smooth skin. So hopefully in a week or two the rain rot will be in the past! Her cellulitis behind has started to respond to the antibiotics too which is a relief. She loves people, horses not so much!
She has a fancy new halter with her name on it and her sire/dam below. Looks nice!!

Karla Wolfson, wife (and assistant trainer) of trainer Marty Wolfson, makes and sells it.
It's great on horses and dogs.
